Pulled by A.L. Jackson - Re-Launch Blitz

Melanie Winters and Daniel Montgomery shared a love most only dream of, a love they believed bonded them together for life. When their world is shattered by the tragic loss of their daughter, overwhelming grief and misguided guilt distorts the truth, and their relationship ends in uncertainty and unanswered questions. For nine years, they drift through life, each unable to forget the one who holds the strings to their heart. In an attempt to escape the pain of her past, Melanie finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage, while Daniel loses himself in a career that means nothing without Melanie by his side. Now, when their lives again intersect, neither can deny the connection they felt so long ago. But will the power that drew them together be enough to heal the wounds from their past, and will they have the courage to overcome the insecurities and fears that threaten to keep them apart? Pulled is a story of attraction and separation, of destiny and duty, of a love so strong it refuses to give up even when all others have. "Okay, this one did it for me in a big way. I'm an angst-lover. And by that I mean, I'm a Thoughtless, Beautiful Disaster, Love Unscripted, Slammed, Fifty Shades of Everything, kind of reader. But there's gotta be an HEA. And not a half-done HEA but a real yeah-this-story-has-been-agonizing-but-look-it-was-all-worth-it HEA. So, that said, I earnestly recommend this book. If you're like me, you'll like this. Enjoy!" Blueberry Boys by Vanessa North

Blueberry Boys****

Connor Graham is a city boy—a celebrated fashion photographer in New York. When his uncle’s death drags him back to the family blueberry farm, all he wants to do is sell it as quickly as he can. Until he meets his uncle’s tenant farmer.

Jed Jones, shy and stammering, devout and dedicated, has always yearned for land of his own and a man to share it with. Kept in the closet by his church, family, and disastrous first love, he longs to be accepted for who he is. But now, with his farm and his future in Connor’s careless hands, he stands to lose even the little he has.

Neither man expects the connection between them. Jed sees Connor—appreciates his art and passion like no one else in this godforsaken town ever has. Connor hears Jed—looks past his stutter to listen to the man inside. The time they share is idyllic, but with the farm sale pending, even their sanctuary is a source of tension. As work, family, and their town’s old-fashioned attitudes pull them apart, they must find a way to reconcile commitments to their careers and to each other.

 Review:

No matter how much he loved his uncle, Connor Graham would love nothing more than to avoid the small town where he grew up.  When his uncle passes away his goal is to get in and get out.  Avoiding the people who spent years bullying him for being the gay kid.  When he meets Jed, the man renting and farming his uncle’s land, Connor can’t deny the instant attraction between them.  Acting on the attraction is easy enough but dealing with the growing connection that neither of them expected is a bit more difficult.   Connor has no desire to stay and Jed has no desire to leave.   In fact, Jed would love nothing more than to be able to buy the land that Connor is so anxious to sell.

Jed would love Connor to wait on the sale until Jed can afford to buy the farm himself.  Which probably wouldn’t be for another couple years.  But it doesn’t take long for him to learn that some of Connor’s dreams are dependent on the sale of the farm.  So Jed can only hope that whoever buys the farm will continue to honor the lease.   As the two of them grow closer, it becomes more and more obvious to Jed that, no matter how happy they make one another, the two of them could never reconcile a relationship with their current lives and independent dreams for the future.

I loved both of these heroes.   Jed was so mild and quietly passionate…about farming, about Connor, about everything.  And Connor?  He’s just kind all the way around.  The way he adjusts the things he says and does to accommodate Jed’s stutter (a stutter that is often frustrating to Jed) is unbelievably thoughtful and loving.  And it never occurs to him to NOT make those accommodations.  He’s just that kind of guy.

Blueberry Boys is a love story and a requirement for any good love story is that there should be an obstacle for one or both main characters to overcome.  Both Jed and Connor have their individual issues to deal with but Jed definitely has the heavier load.  One of my favorite parts of this story is Jed reconciling his faith and his sexual identity.  Vanessa North handled it so beautifully.  The love and kindness that Jed finds within his family and congregation was heartwarming.

Of course, finding that happiness at home doesn’t solve the issues that are keeping Jed and Connor apart. Fortunately Connor is pretty imaginative and he is convinced there is a way that they can share each other’s lives without giving up their dreams. He only needs to convince Jed of the possibilities.

This was a wonderful feel good love story.   Two "forever boy" heroes with plenty of love and kindness to share.  This was my first novel by Vanessa North and it certainly won't be my last.

“If we know this story, we haven’t seen it yet in American fiction, not until now. . . . Deep, heartfelt.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

With its alluring title and breathtaking first two sentences, I found myself being pulled in to a world where a family is ruined by silence and undone by the ultimate tragedy.

Ng effortlessly weaves together both the past and present of five people who are essentially strangers to one another despite being of the same family. Husband and wife, James and Marilyn, are a kind of anomaly in their town being an inter-racial couple. James who’s Chinese wants nothing more than for his children to blend in. Marilyn who was raised by a mother with traditional views of how a woman should be, has always wanted to stand out. Their most intimate thoughts remain unspoken and they make no mention of their past. And thus they’ve created an environment where everything is shrouded in heavy silence. The children comply docilely, internalizing their own feelings.

Silence is the theme of this book. No one talks…or listens. Children are burdened by their parents’ unmentioned failures and unrealized dreams. It’s eerie how in spite of the fact that each kid is so withdrawn, they are keenly observant of the other, noticing little details that escape their parents. Everyone grows further apart as James and Marilyn continue to believe in the fantasy they’ve created in their heads. Lydia was the linchpin of the family with the weight of her parents’ ambitions on her. With Lydia’s shocking death, their delicate family dynamics come apart, revealing each one’s fragility.

I was enthralled by how seamlessly Ng connected one person’s backstory to the next person’s perspective. The best way I can describe it is it felt like I was watching things unfold in real time. I don’t think I’ve come across this writing style before and the effect is astounding. Even now, a few days after I’ve finished it, I still find myself caught up in the emotional upheaval. It’s an expertly written novel that delves deep into that space of denial and insecurity that the characters are afraid to admit to. I ma certain that this will make it to my Top Ten of the year.

That's What HE Said Thursday #53

That's What HE Said is a weekly meme hosted by the wonderful ladies at Chapter Break. It's a chance for us to spotlight and gush over a quote from our current book crush to the object of his desire. We like to pretend he's speaking to us ;)

What better way to celebrate our book boyfriends?

Invincible Summer by Seth King was released earlier this week. It did to me what its predecessor The Summer Remains did - it gutted me. But I love it because it's romantic, poetic and moving. I'll have a review soon but in the meantime, you can read a bit more about it here

The setting: This interaction between Cooper and Summer is particularly touching. Why? Because he never lets Summer feel sorry for herself. He never leaves room for her to doubt that he loves her unconditionally. We would all be so lucky to have a Summer-Cooper connection like this.  ~ Bel

"I just want you to know that if the whole world fell away tomorrow," I whispered, "if the mountains fell into the sea, if all the lights went out, and all my cheesy poems were reduced to dust, you would still be enough for me. I know you think you're nothing, but you're everything, and I was a fool not to see that earlier."

She looked away.  "But I'm completely broken," she said, hiding her scar with her hand. Slowly I pulled down her arm, grabbed her by the chin, and pulled her eyes toward mine.

"And I completely love you. So what?"

Nothing about the ultraconservative geoarchaeologist should attract Adrian, but once he discovers Noah's hidden love for video games, the two connect on a new level. Soon, a quiet but undeniable chemistry sparks.

Something doesn't add up, though. As the miles accumulate and time runs out, Noah must face the most difficult choice of his life. Meanwhile, Adrian must decide whether he's ready to level up. Is their relationship status worth fighting for, or has this game ended before it's even begun?

Invincible Summer by Seth King Release Blitz

We are so proud to be a part of the release day blitz for Invincible Summer by Seth King. If you want to be grabbed by the heartstrings and experience a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love, this is it!

SYNOPSIS:

We all remember our first love, that one affair that took custody of your heart and never really let it go. Readers around the world were touched by The Summer Remains, a heartbreaking and inspiring novel about one of these romances – but Cooper Nichols, the enigmatic young man at the center of the novel, was largely silent on the matter. Until now.

“I just can’t believe it’s over between you guys,” my best friend said as we walked down the pier. “You two were supposed to last forever.”

I stared out at the blue sea. “Oh, trust me, it’s not over. I am going to see that girl’s face in every crowd I look into, forever. And maybe a few forevers after that…”

And so begins the tale of young writer Cooper Nichols. Left in ruins after a tragic summer romance, Cooper is afraid the sun may have set on him for good – until his mother discovers a copy of Cooper’s journal he kept of that summer. As he reluctantly slips back into his own past in the pages of his notebook, Cooper starts to rethink everything he thought he knew about life, death, and all the love that can bloom in between – and what follows is a thrilling and breathtaking journey back to joy that will sink into you and stay there for the long haul.

Illuminating, romantic and soul-stirring, Invincible Summer is a testament to the miraculous power of love, in all its immortal glory and everlasting majesty. If you have ever found yourself drifting back to a long-lost romance during a quiet moment, prepare to be pulled under all over again.

“That one summer. Everyone’s got one, that fleeting season that rearranged you and imprinted itself onto your soul forever. You were mine. I swear I’ll never forget your hazel eyes. I swear I’ll never forget those few months when the winds roared. I’ll always think of you that way. And if you can, please come back to me. At the end of the day I’m just a boy who wants to get back to his first love, and I miss you. Just find a way back, please. I’ll be waiting.

Until then, I’ve got nothing…”

Monster Prick by Kendall Ryan Release Day Blitz

Over my dead body.

That's what I told Gracie when she informed me of her plan to pick some random guy she met online to get rid of her pesky virginity.

If anyone is touching her, it's going to be me.

I shouldn't even be considering it, but I can't get it out of my head: her, under me, begging me.

***
Arrogant. Cocky. Prick.

Those are the words I’d use to describe my older brother’s dangerously handsome best friend.

When he learned of my plan to kick off my white cotton briefs, ditching my good girl persona once and for all by losing my virginity to the first eligible bachelor I could find, he flipped out. Said over his dead body.

He says if anyone’s going to do it, it’s going to be him.

I hate that I’m even considering his offer.

But I am … I sooo am.

Ever since he suggested it, all I can think about is his cocky smile on those full lips as he’s driving in to me.

But if we cross that line … will I ever be able to go back?

MONSTER PRICK, a sexy romantic comedy, is a spin off novella from SCREWED, but can be read as a standalone, as it features a new couple.

EXCERPT

Hudson

“What if I could help you?”

I have no idea what the hell I was thinking. The words just leaped out of my mouth. Listening to Gracie talk about kicking off her granny panties and popping her cherry with some random Internet dick...I guess it drove me temporarily insane.

But there's no taking back the idea now. Gracie sucks in her breath, blinking wide-eyed. “What do you mean?” she asks.

What do I mean? Here I am, sitting next to the world's most beautiful girl—drowning in her eyes, her scent, the gentle puff of her breath on my mouth that begs me to close the distance. I know what I want, but I also know what will happen if I take it. My best friend will rip off my balls and feed them to me. And I'll probably deserve every second.

But sweet Jesus, I'm pretty sure Gracie wants this, too, and that's enough to blow my better judgment to pieces. All I care about right now is making her feel better. In as many ways as possible. And if her slightly quickened breathing, blown pupils, and flushed cheeks are anything to go by...

As an experiment, I dart out the tip of my tongue to wet my lips. Her darkened eyes drop like a magnet yanked them. Yeah, bingo. Having a little black book as thick as the dictionary has its advantages. I know damn well how to tell when a woman wants me.

Review:

The bad:
Monster Prick was a little formulaic and predictable.  Also, I was disappointed that Hudson wasn't as much of a badass as the blurb makes him sound.

The good:
That said, Monster Prick was fun and entertaining.  A sweet and sexy novella that will make you wish for more.  I definitely plan to go back and read Screwed (about Gracie's brother and Hudson's best friend).
