Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid

* * * *

Five strangers. Countless adventures. One epic way to get lost.

Four teens across the country have only one thing in common: a girl named Leila. She crashes into their lives in her absurdly red car at the moment they need someone the most.

Hudson, Bree, Elliot and Sonia find a friend in Leila. And when Leila leaves them, their lives are forever changed. But it is during Leila's own 4,268-mile journey that she discovers the most important truth—sometimes, what you need most is right where you started. And maybe the only way to find what you're looking for is to get lost along the way.

This one has been burning a hole on my bookshelf for the last two years before I finally got to it. You know how sometimes you just need to be at the right place and time for something? This is one of those instances. I think I was finally ready to lose myself in this charming and adventurous story that delivers remarkable insight in the unlikeliest of ways.

There are just some people that come into our lives and however brief their stay is, their impact on us is everlasting. Such is the case when Leila befriends these four individuals, on separate stops, during her epic roadtrip to see the Northern Lights. Each of their encounters are from the strangers' point of view. In Leila, each of them finds a confidant, a person who champions them, a cohort in mischief and a good listener. She is what they need at THAT very moment in their lives. While Leila is like a miracle angel to them, she remains a mystery until her story is explored in the last few chapters of the book.

I was amazed by the ease with which Leila managed to immerse herself into her new friends’ worlds and get along with them.  She’s so incredibly personable and trusting. She has this way about her that puts them at ease that they trust her implicitly. I could picture each person in each town she said goodbye to, scratching their heads wondering, “did that really just happen?” Every one of them she comes in contact with is at a crossroads in their lives. By the time this carefree stranger is on the road again, her new friends see things with greater clarity.

As engrossing as their individual stories are, it’s Leila’s at the end that’s the most intriguing. She’s still searching and waiting for a connection to something she desperately wants to find again. I won’t say anything further - just that she may tug at your heartstrings a little. Her sweetness and optimism remains, she’s just changed.

Reading Let’s Get Lost gave me a sense of wanderlust. It was enchanted by every one of their stories and realized that I was able to connect with them on a certain level. Through Leila and her new friends, I also got to participate in some hi-jinx fun and enjoy their camaraderie. All the critical praise that's been heaped upon it is well-deserved. It’s such a rewarding story; I hope you’ll give it a try!

Waiting on Wednesday (178)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that highlights future releases that we are excitedly anticipating.

Getting Him BackBy K. A. Mitchel
Publication Date:  February 15, 2015

An unexpected fresh start leads to an unlikely-but-absolutely-perfect pairing in this male/male new-adult novel from bestselling gay romance author K.A. Mitchell

Ethan may have followed his high school sweetheart to college only to get dumped his first day there, but he's not going to let that stop him from exploring all his new life has to offer. Sex-only hookups, his photography, new friends and a campus-wide game of zombies vs humans all help keep his mind off his broken heart and move him toward building a new, better life without his ex.

And then there's Wyatt. Mysterious, grouchy—hot. And possibly not gay. But Ethan's not going to let that stand in the way of figuring out what makes Wyatt tick. New college goal? Get Wyatt into bed and into Ethan's life.

Step one: arrange a "tutoring" date. Step two: "accidentally" bump into Wyatt as often as possible. Step three: explore the sexy body under that ever-present hoodie. And when their friendship deepens into something neither of them expect, convince Wyatt he's not just a pity fling or a one-time hookup, but that Ethan is in it for the long haul.

This book is approximately 43,000 words.

Knox feels it too—a shocking animal magnetism that drives him to risk his own life to protect Briar’s. Paroled at last, he tries to resist her. She’s too innocent, too sweet, and she has no idea what Knox is capable of. But a single touch can lead to a kiss—and a taste…until the only crime is denying what feels so right…

Status Update by Annabeth Albert

* * * * *

Adrian Gottlieb is winning at life. He's a successful video game designer with everything a man could ask for, including a warm comfy ride to Denver and a date for his sister's wedding. But he finds himself in need of a total reboot when he's left stranded at a snowy campground in Utah. Holiday plans? Epic fail.

That is until Noah Walters offers him shelter for the night and a reluctant cross-country ride. Nothing about the ultraconservative geoarchaeologist should attract Adrian, but once he discovers Noah's hidden love for video games, the two connect on a new level. Soon, a quiet but undeniable chemistry sparks.

Something doesn't add up, though. As the miles accumulate and time runs out, Noah must face the most difficult choice of his life. Meanwhile, Adrian must decide whether he's ready to level up. Is their relationship status worth fighting for, or has this game ended before it's even begun?

Review:

I read Status Update in October of last year but never wrote a review.  Not sure why other than life happened (the last couple months of the year were emotionally insane) and I got distracted.  That can be the only reason because this story was wonderful and needs to be shared with romance lovers everywhere.

When Noah sees a young hipster with his tiny dog at the dog area of the RV park, he just wishes he were alone.  Noah doesn’t do people.  And his dog doesn’t do other dogs.  Especially snack size balls of fur.  Noah isn’t necessarily surly.  Just an intense introvert.  After a few words with the outgoing and energetic young man, Noah heads back to his RV.  But his quiet lonesome existence is upset later that evening when the same man he saw earlier is stranded in the cold after an argument with his boyfriend.   Noah is a naturally kind and thoughtful person so he isn’t going to leave the guy and his dog out in freezing rain.  He invites him to stay overnight after which he can head to the RV park office to call his family for assistance.

Adrian is kicking himself for being in a situation that will make his entire family say, “I told you so.”  But he is extremely grateful for the kindness of the quiet stranger he had met earlier.  Before his road trip to visit family spectacularly fell apart.  He’s even more grateful when said stranger takes mercy on his situation and offers to drive him to Denver, giving him a temporary reprieve from hearing the expected familial censure about his current situation and his luck in the relationship department.

What these two don’t expect is to bond over a mutual love of video games during their drive to Denver.  Adrian is a video game designer of a popular crowd-sourced video game and Noah just happens to be one of their financial contributors.   The fact that they are also attracted to each other is not lost on either of them.  On top of all of that they just seem to work together naturally.  Adrian understands Noah’s need to think and consider before doing or saying anything and Noah appreciates Adrian’s tendency to take control of situations.  Unfortunately, Adrian is out and proud.  Noah?  Not so much.  His fundamental Christian upbringing as well as his job as a professor at a well-known conservative Christian college makes it impossible for him to be who he is.

Adrian’s enthusiasm and hopeful nature allow him to look at this growing relationship as something with potential.  Unfortunately, no matter how much Noah enjoys their time together and no matter how obvious it is that Adrian can give him all the things Noah has wanted for years, Noah is convinced this is just a temporary blip in his normally lonely existence.  But Adrian is determined to find a way to make it all work in a way that will make them both happy.  The question is whether Noah can make a leap that lacks the certainty that he has always required when making any sort of life changing decision.

Even after a re-read (to write this review) my heart shattered and mended itself as if I was reading it for the first time.  But don’t think this is one big angst-y mess.  I laughed out loud - A LOT -  while reading this.  So much I had to share a number of quotes with my fellow Bibliojunkies.  Quotes that were amusing enough to get Shel to read it (AND enjoy it) when she doesn’t usually gravitate towards m/m titles.

So, yeah.  Status Update is a total winner.  If you are looking for a feel good love story featuring some great laugh out loud moments, hot geeks, and some real emotional kissing and sexy time, you must pick this one up.   The only reason this book didn’t make it to my Top Ten of 2015  is because I was limiting myself to one book per author and I had already chosen Annabeth Albert’s Delivered Fast for the list (BTW – order the Portland Heat bundle here – you won’t be disappointed).  So, if you weren’t aware of my feelings after this review, that should give you a better idea.
Happy Reading!

Between The Shadows by Chanel Cleeton Review Tour

* * * *

A sexy new thriller about love and revenge from the author of the Capital Confessions and International School series…

X lives by three rules: Show no weakness. Trust no one. Don’t get caught. She lives by the rules they gave her.

The Academy—set in London, shrouded in secrecy—it trains spies, computer experts, and assassins. Their mission? Dispensing justice and altering the course of world politics. Or so they think. In a world where secrets are weapons and some kills are impossible to forget, everything X thought she knew about her life is about to change.

They taught her to fight. To blend into the shadows like a ghost, to operate on the fringes of society, to change her identity with ease. They taught her to kill.

She’ll need every skill they taught her, to stay alive.

I was so excited to learn that Chanel Cleeton had another book coming out. Between Shadows is different from both of her previous series – International School and Capital Confessions – because this time Cleeton brings us to spy school and it’s a dangerous venture!

I liked how the novel started with X on assignment. Its vagueness left me guessing as to whether she was the hero or the villain. All I gathered was that she’s hard-core, cynical and untrusting of everyone, save her younger sister. They have lived at the Academy for years where their lives have been mapped out for them. X dutifully follows the Academy’s directions and protocol because it’s the only way she knows to ensure her and her sister’s safety.

Lately though X’s conscience is weighing on her. Living with secrets, in secrecy day after day is taking its toll. She’s in for a mega surprise when she’s presented with her next assignment and an unexpected reunion with someone from her past. In seconds the lines are blurred and she’s unsure of what is true. Luke, her blast from the past, forces her to face the questions that she’s been unwilling to find the answers to much less ask in the first place. He is single-handedly dismantling her well-ordered world.  Trust is not a bountiful commodity in her line of work, and with a younger sister to look after, the stakes are extremely high. However, the temptation to unearth the Academy’s secrets and uncover the truth about her own past are too strong for her not to succumb to. She was already in a deadly line of work and now it seems that their security is threatened.

What follows is a highly suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse where X and Luke have to uncover who their real enemy is and fight back. I had so much fun reading this; so much so that I even dreamed I was in spy school and Cleeton was one of the directors. Yeah – I got THAT into it! I wish I could be as fearless and fit as X.

Cleeton is one of my “go-to” authors when I want something romantic or naughty. There’s always been something accessible about her characters and I was happy to see it be the case in this novel. X is loyal and devoted. When you finally win her hard-earned trust, she’s exactly the kind of person you want in your corner. Whether you’re a fan of Cleeton’s or enjoy stories about uncovering and destroying shady organizations, Between Shadows will certainly give you a thrilling ride!

Author Bio:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Exclusive Excerpt from BOILING POINT:

“All yours. You’ve been its cruel keeper for months.” He tilted his hips, presenting himself to her in a way that should have been crude, but on Austin, it was all animal grace. “At any time at all, you could have demanded me. Sent me to my knees to lick you off with one word. Grabbed my cock through my pants in front of everyone and told them who it belonged to.” His eyelids drooped as if the scenario was an aphrodisiac. “Please yourself with me, Polly. My body. My cock. Own it all.”
“I will,” she whispered, shaken by his speech. Emboldened by it. Holding his gaze she lifted the belt to his arousal and looped the leather around its ruddy base. A broken curse fell from his mouth, the muscles of his abdomen jerking. His big hands flew up, as if to grip her shoulders for balance, but they fisted and dropped back to his sides, where she told him with her inaction they must remain. Careful to keep the buckle from touching him, Polly tugged the leather to her right, watching the belt slither around his erection in a circular caress.
“Oh, fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” He swayed on his knees. “More. More.
Polly leaned close and ran her tongue along the seam of his lips, pulling away when he tried to capture her mouth in a kiss. “Only if it pleases me.”
“Yes.” His nod was disjointed, breathing uneven. “Only if it pleases you.”
“It does.” Faster than the first time, Polly pulled the belt left, whimpering at the sight of his aching flesh being squeezed between the leather strip, the precum that beaded at his tip. She repeated the action twice more, faster and with more surrounding pressure on his length each time. “How does it feel?
“Like nothing else,” Austin groaned, neck muscles straining. “There’s nothing else.”
His declaration made her want to prove him wrong. Or maybe she needed a distraction to avoid feeling humbled. With the decision to stop thinking and experience, Polly grasped Austin’s hand and dragged it up her skirt, between her thighs where his palm conformed to her shape without hesitation, ripping a moan from her throat. “Th-there is something else.”
Austin’s gaze turned intent, fixated on her face. “You need to fuck now, sweet?” There was nothing casual about his perusal of her body. It was predatory filth and it set Polly ablaze. His middle finger pushed at her entrance, through the barrier of her underwear. “Ah God, just set me loose with a yes. I will split the fucking headboard down the middle from bucking into this pussy.”

Fake ID
Skinny dipping
Road trip!!!

Where it gets complicated? Ryan and Chris. Best friends. Both sweet, funny, totally hot, and totally into Annie.

But there are some things on The List that Annie only wants to do with Ryan. . .

Get Heart Broken
Fall in love

Annie is a fish out of water at college.  It's her first taste of freedom after growing up with a seriously over-protective family.  She's never been allowed to go out by herself, let alone have friends, go on dates, or any of the other things a teenager does.  She's socially awkward, naive, and completely lost in the college experience.

Her roommate, Cammi, brings her into a group of friends, including Ryan (Cammi's cousin) and Chris, Ryan's best friend.  Annie has no idea how to navigate guys and dating and while she's inexplicably drawn to Ryan, she ends up dating Chris.

Ryan grew up with Cammi because his mother was sick for years before dying.  He doesn't let people in, but he's drawn to Annie.  Too bad his best friend is really into her.

Annie and Ryan hide their feelings and fight their attraction to one another, but they continue to grow closer until not being together is unimaginable.  Will the group of friends be able to weather the storm when everything is out in the open?

The List is an incredibly fun and engrossing book that will keep you up until the wee hours to finish.  Watching Annie try to figure out how to be a young adult, all innocence and awkwardness, is highly entertaining.  While Ryan and Chris are the book boyfriends we all want.  Their group of friends is made up a quirky cast of characters and I look forward to reading all about their descents as well.  Calli's book, No Regrets is already available and downloaded on my Kindle!

Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure.

Law school made Chanel realize she’d rather spend her days writing sexy stories than in a courtroom, and she hasn’t looked back since. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she’s happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, her three pups, and her husband.

Chanel writes contemporary romances, women’s fiction, and thrillers. She is published by Harlequin HQN, Penguin/InterMix, and Penguin/Berkley and is the author of the International School, Capital Confessions, and Wild Aces series.
