Waiting on Wednesday (192)
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that highlights future releases that we are excitedly anticipating.
By Colleen Hoover
Publication Date: August 2, 2016
Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily; and the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his no dating rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan, her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
With this bold and deeply personal novel Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all too human characters, “It Ends with Us” is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.
By Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton
Publication Date: August 16, 2016
Janet Evanovich, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series, teams up with Emmy-winning writer Phoef Sutton for a brand-new series of thrillers featuring the invincible and incompatible pairing of Knight and Moon.
Emerson Knight is introverted, eccentric, and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he’s also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he’d probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with mega-bank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.
What starts off as an inquiry about missing bank funds in the Knight account leads to inquiries about a missing man, missing gold, and a life-and-death race across the country. Through the streets of Washington, D.C., and down into the underground vault of the Federal Reserve in New York City, an evil plan is exposed. A plan so sinister that only a megalomaniac could think it up, and only the unlikely duo of the irrepressibly charming Emerson Knight and the tenacious Riley Moon can stop it.
By Abbi Glines
Publication Date: August 23, 2016
In the follow-up to Abbi Glines’s #1 New York Times bestseller Until Friday Night—which bestselling author Kami Garcia called “tender, honest, and achingly real”—three teens from a small southern town are stuck in a dramatic love triangle.
Willa can’t erase the bad decisions of her past that led her down the path she’s on now. But she can fight for forgiveness from her family. And she can protect herself by refusing to let anyone else get close to her.
High school quarterback and town golden boy Brady used to be the best of friends with Willa—she even had a crush on him when they were kids. But that’s all changed now: her life choices have made her a different person from the girl he used to know.
Gunner used to be friends with Willa and Brady, too. He too is larger than life and a high school football star—not to mention that his family basically owns the town of Lawton. He loves his life, and doesn’t care about anyone except himself. But Willa is the exception—and he understands the girl she’s become in a way no one else can.
As secrets come to light and hearts are broken, these former childhood friends must face the truth about growing up and falling in love…even if it means losing each other forever.

EXCERPT
One might think being an immortal was a blessing, never grow old, never grow sick, never die. At one time in St. John Evernight’s life, he considered it a blessing too. He would be around long after the simple humans who surrounded him were nothing but dust. They could stare all they liked at his “strange” hair and frosty green eyes. They could gossip and speculate about him until they lost their voices. It didn’t matter. He was untouchable, and they were but fragile sacks of blood and bone.
How naive he’d been. Because living
forever merely meant a lack of escape from the desolation of regret and
loneliness. He knew now that he could walk down Jermyn Street endlessly, see
the sands of time shift and rearrange before him, and never be a part of life.
“Brooding, Mr. Evernight?”
Sin almost jumped at the sudden sound
of Augustus’s voice by his side. Damn, the blasted man loved to startle him. He
gave Augustus a passing glance. Dressed in conservative brown tweed and a
bowler hat, the angel appeared every inch the English gentlemen, save for his
dark coloring that marked him to be from Southern climes.
“It’s really quite the trick, popping
up like a soap bubble whenever you choose, Augustus. You must teach me how one
day.”
The man’s mouth twitched. “With your
luck, you’d pop up in the middle of a parliamentary session.”
Yes, Sin had abominable luck. Or
perhaps it was more a matter of making abominable choices.
“You’re brooding again,” Augustus
remarked.
“I’m not brooding. This is simply my
face.”
Augustus snorted but remained silent
as they walked along, past Trafalgar Square and down Whitehall.
“Care to tell me why you called me here?”
Sin asked, when they came upon the grounds of Westminster. For the past year,
Sin had been in Rome, soaking in the warmer temperatures, drinking espresso in
cafes along the Piazza della Rotunda, under the shade of the ancient Pantheon.
He’d eaten simple but delicious food, and listened to the rapid fire of
Italian, and felt…well, not peace, but a measure of contentment.
Until Augustus had sent for him.
Returning to England sat like a stone in his gut. But he would obey. Augustus
was his mentor, and the man who’d given him salvation. The price was a lifetime
of servitude. To be fair, his role was for justice, not evil, which was a nice
change of pace.
A massive dray rattled past, kicking
up dust and sending a fug of stale manure into the air. They hurried past the
cloud and headed for Westminster Abbey. Sin hadn’t planned on visiting today,
but here they were all the same. He wondered if Augustus somehow had led him to
their usual meeting place or if Sin had merely headed that way because of the
man’s sudden arrival.
He’d like to think the latter. It did
not sit well with him having another control his actions. Not since a certain
evil fae had kept Sin as a blood slave for years. Even now, the memory made his
stomach turn.
Not a soul acknowledged them as they
walked through the abbey and into the cloisters. Here, a rare bit of sunlight
peeked through the constant cloud cover and cast lacy shadows along the
walkway. The sound of their boot heels clacked out a steady rhythm as they
strolled along.
“Layla returns to London tonight.”
At the mention of her name, Sin’s
heart stilled within his breast. He’d tried his best to ward off all finer
feelings, to remain numb, detached from life. And yet he could not, for the
life of him, remain immune to Layla Starling. His childhood friend. The one
woman who could take his breath, his reason, simply by laying eyes upon her.
Stuffing his shaking hands into his
trouser pockets, Sin forced himself to keep an even tone. “So then I am to
begin watching over her?”
God, but he did not want to. It would
be agony, staying so close to her and never being allowed to show his true
feelings. And yet a thrum of anticipation went through him at the mere prospect
of seeing Layla once more.
“Are you ready?” Augustus asked, though his
expression told Sin he fully expected an affirmative answer.
So Sin told him the only truth left
to him. “I will not fail her.”
Sweet Little Lies by Jill Shalvis
***
All it takes is one wish to gain your heart’s desire, but with this wishing well, you better be ready for the fates to throw you a curveball…
Ever the rational one, Finn is the brains behind the bar he runs with his wild brother—but lately it seems like he’s just been going through the motions. The tragedy of his mother’s death all those years ago still feels like yesterday and it’s only when Pru, the feisty new girl, appears that he realizes there’s more to life than hanging on to the past. And with sexy, adventurous Pru, there might even be a future.
Pru made a wish—but not for herself. New to town, but more familiar with Finn than she’d like to admit, she made a wish for him…that he might fall in love and find the happiness he deserves. But as she helps him find joy in every fun, quirky way possible, Pru realizes she’s in over her head—and her heart.
Pru’s secret could ruin everything, but will the truth set them free? Or will the pain of the past ruin any chance at new love?

Set in beautiful San Fransisco, Sweet Little Lies is the perfect read for a snowy winter day. Shalvis expertly transports you to the Bay, filled with hot alpha males with beautiful souls, making you wish Heartbreaker Bay was real.
Sweet Little Lies introduces us to Pru, a young woman whose life was changed when she called her parents to pick her up from a party, resulting in her parents being killed in a car accident. Making matters worse, her father had been drinking. Pru carries the guilt of that accident, trying her best to help all those who were hurt and the surviving family of the man who was killed. She just didn't plan on falling for the son of that man.
Finn thinks meeting Pru was just happenstance and falls hard for her. He has a very close and small group of friends. They are the family he and his brother have chosen after a childhood with an abusive father, Finn was forced to come home from college to raise his little brother, Sean, when his dad died in a car accident. He's spent the last eight years holding everything together and building a life by sheer force of will. He doesn't let anyone else in, until Pru.
I love Jill Shalvis, but my problem with her most recent books is that the heroine does something bad to the hero (here, Pru purposefully inserts herself into Finn's life without telling him who she is and why she's doing it), then the hero finds out, after the window of opportunity for the heroine to come clean, and usually because something else has happened to force the heroine's hand. Hero then gets angry and leaves. Somehow, hero in considering the circumstances, realizes that despite being the wronged party, it's somehow his fault that heroine lied or omitted material facts. His friends and/or family all tell him it's his fault. And finally, hero finds heroine and apologizes to her! I get that this is fiction and we all want everything to be someone else's fault, but this scenario really gets on my nerves! I have this crazy sense of fairness and a logical mind and this situation goes against everything in me!
That being said, Sweet Little Lies is my favorite recent Shalvis read. Finn and his crew of crazy friends are awesome. Pru is, well, she carries a massive amount of guilt and desperation. She's strong in many ways, but terrified of life and living, instead she buries herself in this quest as a means to keep from really putting herself out there. In the end, Finn and Pru are a great match - he's steadfast and loyal, which is what Pru needs most of all. I'm interested to see how Shalvis pairs up the remaining friends.

Avenged (Altered #2) by Marnee Blake
* * *
Source: e-galley provided by publisher
Three terrifying months.
That’s how long Kitty Laughton has been at the mercy of the scientist who experimented on her town, killing over a dozen people and giving the rest of them unique powers. But Kitty doesn’t feel powerful, especially when she learns the crazy man plans to test his research on more unsuspecting people. She refuses to let anyone else die, but trapped with no one to help her she’s out of options…that is until sexy and exasperating Nick Degrassi arrives.
Special-ops soldier Nick blames himself for Kitty’s capture, and he’ll do whatever he can to free the quiet beauty, but close quarters and a shared secret bring an attraction that neither of them expected. With the organization that started it all making mercenaries for hire, Nick and Kitty must save themselves and stop a madman…before it’s too late.
Ever since I finished Altered, I've had this series in the back of my mind wanting to see everyone's fate once they were all scattered by the end of the first book. Avenged picks up three months later with Kitty being held captive by the people who wrought the heinous atrocity upon her hometown. As one of the few survivors, they have a special interest in her and her abilities that resulted from the drug they unleashed upon the civilians. She believes that she's on her own as no one has come to her rescue yet. She's proven wrong when Nick finally shows up unexpectedly and not entirely prepared. They hatch an escape plan and it's pure adrenaline from there.
One of the things I liked about Avenged is that the once the action starts there's almost no respite from it. Kitty and Nick are the main players in this sequel and are constantly on the go once they escape the clutches of their captors. They're in a rush against time to reunite with the others (Blue, Seth and trusted military personnel) to prevent the mad scientist from selling his research and drug on the black market.
I wanted an action-packed read and that's what I got. Things are by no means settled once you get to the end of Avenged - yep, another cliffhanger! Everyone is left in a quandary and with the stakes at an ultra high level, I am on edge to see how this ragtag group of unlikely friends manage to save themselves and the unsuspecting innocent lives out there.

Forevermore (Darkest London #7) by Kristen Callihan
* * * *
From Forever:
Miss Layla Starling, the young, beautiful, and extremely wealthy heiress, is the talk of London. Until now, she's managed to evade the marriage noose. Despite the fact that she is unfortunately American, she's received a staggering number of offers. And turned down every one. St. John Evernight does not want to admit the relief he feels every time he hears that she has rejected one of her suitors. Which is unfair of him. Layla deserves to be happy. But he can not offer her happiness. He will never be normal, never be anything but a freak in her world. So St. John resolves to keep his distance, until he is recruited by the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals to guard Layla. For she is in grave danger, and he is about to learn the full extent of his powers.

Forevermore is the seventh and final installment in the Darkest London series and will be bittersweet for anyone who has been following the series since the beginning. It's true even for someone like me who has only read a few of the books because no matter where in the series you pick up, it's one of the most fascinating and captivating series you'll come across.
As with the previous books there are connections that run deep and some of them not always good. In Forevermore, young Layla is being raised by Augustus, the Judgement demon. She knows that he's not her father and the identity of her mother, while known to him, is a secret mainly to keep Layla safe. She grows into a remarkable young woman who attracts plenty of attention, and it this world, some of that attention is unfortunately otherworldly and dangerous. Enter St. James or Sin Evernight, a childhood friend who has gifts of his own. He and Layla have always had a connection and are destined to be in each other's lives. Destiny is a recurring theme throughout the story. As Layla comes into her own powers, it's up to Augustus and Sin to help keep her safe as she trains and prepares her for her future.
Even though I've only read two of the books in this series (Firelight and Soulbound), I had no trouble immersing myself into this one. Callihan provides background on characters without it taking away from the pace of the story. If anything it only set my resolve to read the other books because all these characters are brilliant, especially the women! This was something that was obvious to me since Firelight - the women are dynamic, fierce and smart. They make the Darkest London world stunning.
Fans of this series will be sad to see this end. I love that Callihan brought back some previous characters, two of them very dear to me, as if bringing this back full circle. If you're new to this, you should start from the beginning - you won't be disappointed!

But appearances can be deceiving.
While Simon may have the answers for millions of women all over the world, when it comes to his own love life, he’s a giant, sexy mess. Divorced, and convinced that he’ll never love again, the very last thing he expects is one Charly Boudreaux.

And why would he want to?
Excerpt:
“Hi there, handsome.”
“Well, hello, love.”
“You know,” I say as I lock the door behind him, then walk to my counter to close out the till and get ready to leave. “I’ve discovered that since you’ve been here, you’re very bad for my productivity.”
“How is that?” He leans on the counter and braces his chin on his fist, watching me.
“I’m closing the shop early, for one.”
“I do believe the sign in the window says you close at six.” He checks his watch. “And look at that, it’s six.”
“I haven’t actually closed at six since…well, I don’t remember. I usually chat with customers, redesign displays, shop for new stock. But most of that has been set aside because I seem to be spending most of my time with a certain sexy Brit. It’s a good thing you’re cute.”
He raises a brow and stands to full height, taking my breath away. His ink is on display again in a simple black T-shirt, stretched over wide, muscular shoulders.
Where did my knees go again?
“Cute, am I?”
His accent gets even thicker when he’s turned on, and it’s on full blast now.
“Adorable.”
He slowly circles around the counter and leans into me, pinning my hips against it. His lips are inches from mine.
“I don’t think a man is supposed to be cute.”
“No?” Oh, God, I can’t breathe right when he’s this close to me. His hands are on my hips now, his fingers under the hem of my blouse, and then gliding up my skin and over my bra to cup my breasts.
“We shouldn’t do this here.” Is that my voice? I sound breathy and turned on, which is pretty accurate.
“No one is here,” he says and brushes feather-soft kisses over my cheek to my ear. My body is one giant shiver. Thank God for the giant display I built today that blocks us from outside traffic.
As if by their own volition, my hands make their way down the back of his jeans to cup his very fine ass just as he nips my neck, making me gasp.
“How cute am I now?” he whispers, never taking his lips from my skin.
“You’re just precious,” I reply, hearing my own accent thicken along with his cock pressed to my belly.
“You make me laugh,” he says, smiling against my neck. “You make me so hard it hurts. And I’m grateful that you’re wearing a skirt.”
“Why is that?”
He reaches down and balls the material in his fists, raising it above my waist.
“You’re not wearing panties,” he says with surprise, his blue eyes pinned to mine.
“Not today.”
