When "normal" ends, survival begins...
The sickness came on suddenly and violently. When it was
done, waitress Blue Michaels was different in a really strange way. And the
entire town of Glory was dead...except for her.
Only that's not exactly true. A handful of people made
it, including U.S. Army Specialist Seth Campbell, who was caught in the wrong
town at the worst time. He's fierce and protective, and way too good-looking.
As much as they need a leader—as much as Blue wants to trust him—there are too many
questions and not enough time for answers. Now they are hunted. But what their
pursuers don't know is each of them has strange new powers. And they'll use
their "gifts" to survive...no matter who stands in their way.
Altered is a quick-paced, action-filled story taking its
characters and readers through one hell of an adventure.
When Blue Michael’s wakes up to discover that she’s one
of only two survivors – the other being a stranger – in a small town, she has
no idea what to think. The only thing that’s apparent is that she’s different
and that Seth, the stranger in front of her, may or may not be her enemy. Seth
who was simply stopping through caught up in this intrigue as well. Overly
cautious and quick to help, he whisks Blue away from that town so they can find
answers. Along the way, they run into her friends and discover that as
survivors, they’ve all taken on new abilities and someone wants to find them badly. They have no choice but to travel together as a group and place their trust in each other.
I liked that the plot is fast-paced and I got the sense
of how new and disorienting their new lives are. Seth with his military
background has seen the battlefield and is the only one who understands with
any clarity how dire their situation is. The rest of their group made up of mere
civilians with no training and still in disbelief, look up to him as their
leader. He’s uneasy being put in that position again of having to look out for
others but he also can’t walk away from them, particularly Blue. The two of
them have developed a connection made more intense by their predicament.
As I said earlier, this was a fast read and I had a good
time with it. I’m anxious to know how things turn out now that Blake has left
us with a cliffhanger!
