Felicity Montague is through with pretending she prefers society parties to books about bone setting—or that she’s not smarter than most people she knows, or that she cares about anything more than her dream of becoming a doctor.
A year after an accidentally whirlwind tour of Europe, which she spent evading highwaymen and pirates with her brother Monty, Felicity has returned to England with two goals in mind—avoid the marriage proposal of Callum Doyle, a lovestruck suitor from Edinburgh; and enroll in medical school. However, her intellect and passion will never be enough in the eyes of the administrators, who see men as the sole guardians of science.
But then a small window of hope opens. Doctor Alexander Platt, an eccentric physician that Felicity idolizes, is looking for research assistants, and Felicity is sure that someone as forward thinking as her hero would be willing to take her on. However, Platt is in Germany, preparing to wed Felicity’s estranged childhood friend Johanna. Not only is Felicity reluctant to opening old wounds, she also has no money to make the trip.
Luckily, a mysterious young woman is willing to pay Felicity’s way, so long as she’s allowed to travel with Felicity disguised as her maid. In spite of her suspicions, Felicity agrees, but once the girl’s true motives are revealed, Felicity becomes part of a perilous quest that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.

All right. The boys had more than their fair share of adventure in The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, so now it's the girls' turn. Sorry, Monty and Percy can't have all the fun. We already knew Felicity (Monty's younger sister) was a firecracker. She's smart, fearless and unafraid to share her opinions. Thank goodness for her because she held things together for the boys when things looked bleak. Lady's Guide starts out as far away as possible from excitement. Felicity is working in a bakery in Scotland feeling slightly defeated because she hasn't been able to pursue her dream of studying medicine yet. She has the brains but it's the misfortune in being born a girl that thwarts her at every turn. When the bakery owner proposes to her, offering her a comfortable, stable life with the understanding that she gives up her ambition, she hightails it out of there so fast for one last ditch effort to get into med school.
So much happens that sadly resonates with what's been happening in our world lately. The struggles Felicity goes through to be taken seriously and prove her worth and abilities are so freaking frustrating. (I couldn't help wondering how she would react to our current social and political backsliding.) Anyway, with Monty and Percy hopelessly and sickeningly in love (yes, they're back as well), Felicity has to rely on herself for all the pep talks and becomes resourceful when obstacles pop up. I love how that brain of hers works. Thanks to her previous dalliance with pirates, she has connections to take her to Germany to meet up with an old friend. And that's using the term very loosely. Joanna, is marrying a scientist Felicity would love to have mentor her. She just has to be discreet especially since she's travelling with the pirate, Sim. Sim who has her own secret agenda is masquerading as Felicity's servant girl. Things go amuck at the wedding and soon all three ladies are on the run, desperately racing against time when they realize what's at stake.
If ever I have the urge to run away and form a pirate gang of badass women I'd want Felicity, Joanna and Sim to be there. Each of them represents a different face of feminism. Felicity is studious, firm and intelligent. A natural leader who keeps a calm head during a crisis. Joanna embraces her femininity, and unlike Felicity who openly rails against expectations, Joanna subvertly fights that by working her femininity to her advantage. She's diligent, curious, observant and cunning when the need arises. Sim, having grown up amongst pirates has a more rough and tumble streak, is disciplined, strong and unconstrained by etiquette or society's standards. Their bond only strengthens as their journey becomes perilous.
The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is another action-packed fare set to a fascinating historical background that highlights friendship and sisterhood. I hope reading this encourages all the Felicitys, Joannas and Sims of the world to rise up because if anything, we see that women are more than capable and get things done when they band together.

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young
* * *
A series of chance encounters leads to a sizzling new romance from the New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series.
The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn't hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava's ever had. And that's all it was--until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.
When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb's orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he's stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart's in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she's made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn't quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her....

This is not Ava's day as the forces that be are playing a cruel, twisted sick joke on her by insisting on throwing her in with the one person who's currently the bane of her existence? Worse is that they're in an enclosed space with no escape. Short of opening the airlocks, Ava has no choice but to deal with the annoying Scot on her flight who does nothing but push her buttons and treat her rudely. Caleb's impertinence and lack of manners may make her boil but his looks have the opposite effect on her. Ladies, why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we allow the hot, rude guy to still make us lose our reasoning?
Anyway, they hook up for just the one time and then hook up again and so on. It's an arrangement that suits their needs, and hey they're grown ups so why not? But of course feelings tend to complicate things and then there's always one person wanting more and soon they're afraid to address those growing feelings and allow things to get more complicated.
I had mixed feelings about Caleb. That sexy, arrogant thing didn't do it's magic for me for some reason. Ava, however, was far more interesting with a backstory that shows she's been through some deeply troubling stuff and is only now just getting back on her feet. The most compelling aspect of Fight or Flight are the moments of female empowerment and the fierce loyalty between Ava and her best friend, Harper. Their history is touching and they go through a scary moment together which tests their friendship. I'm so glad that their friendship is as heavily featured as the romance, and to be honest I was more emotionally invested in that.
Samantha Young has written some of my favourite books and Fight or Flight has me split. It's been a while since I've been conflicted by a HEA. I'm all about Ava and Harper's steadfast friendship which is on the plus side. I love that their female camaraderie was shown in such a positive light because it's so important for us to see women lift each other up. For me it came down to Caleb, and Ava's choice to be with him. He did show glimpses of compassion and caring which made him redeemable at some point but when push came to shove, he used Ava's past to hurt her and I was livid because of it. I guess you could say I took it personally because it shook me hard how he treated her. Considering how much she was devastated by her past and how long it took her to overcome it, I'm not sure it's something that I myself would've been able to forgive as easily. Obviously, it's a matter of personal opinion so while the ending didn't resonate with me, I'm sure there are readers who loved it.

Fall (VIP #3) by Kristen Callihan
* * * * *
The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways.
In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip.
Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands.
Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor.
An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room.
Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun.
Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything.
All we have to do is trust enough to fall.

Man, talk about a meet-cute borne out of fantasy. I don't know about you but if I came across my favourite celebrity crush I don't know that I'd kiss him with the intent to distract him so I could take the last tub of mint chocolate chip ice cream out of his hands. To be fair, Stella isn't aware that she's kissed Jax Blackwood, the sexy and troubled lead singer of Kill John. At least not until later but there was a good reason for her cunning. A massive snowstorm in the city meant she had to have all her basic food groups. They walk away from each other - Stella with ice cream in hand - and think they'll never see each other again. But wait! Stella is contacted to house sit for someone while they're away. She's not aware whom she's housesitting for but her new neighbour is none other than the mystery man she kissed and then she finally puts all the pieces together.
I think of Stella as someone who's just kind of floating along. She has an unconventional job and to be honest, I'd never heard of such a thing but it makes sense. It became a lightbulb moment for me. Callihan touches on several issues from social awkwardness to anxiety to depression. If you've read the previous two books in the VIP series you know that Jax had tried to commit suicide two years before and that the aftermath left the band shaken and off-kilter. Jax strives on a daily basis to work through his feelings, doing everything he can to manage his mental health. Callihan purposefully stayed away from details about his suicide attempt and instead chose to focus on his recovery. Fall is a little more personal to Callihan and I admire that incorporated some of her own experiences with her mental health. She gave us a character actively working to understand his illness and take care of himself is positive encouragement to any reader, especially for anyone who lives with the same struggles.
The friendship between Stella and Jax has become such a bright point in their lives. Stella has never felt the love of a family and Jax who created his own family with his band have contrasting experiences but at the heart of it, they both want to feel that intimacy with someone they can trust and who will look out for them. Their approach to finding that is different but they undoubtedly find each other's company comforting, safe and most importantly, true.
I enjoyed Fall immensely because Stella's quirkiness played well with Jax's rock star moments and his always coy and flirtatious moves. They have such a great vibe together. You know I can't resist a cheeky guy and I love Jax's nicknames for Stella and his humour. There are appearances from the rest of the band and their significant others including many funny instances with Scottie, the band manager. I'm picky about my rock star romances and only a few authors do it for me, Kristen Callihan being one of them. She has created a sexy, beautiful romance that shows how powerful human connection is in helping us to be stronger, better and feel that we belong.

Act Like It (London Celebrities #1) by Lucy Parker
* * * * 1/2
This just in: romance takes center stage as West End theatre's Richard Troy steps out with none other than castmate Elaine Graham
Richard Troy used to be the hottest actor in London, but the only thing firing up lately is his temper. We all love to love a bad boy, but Richard's antics have made him Enemy Number One, breaking the hearts of fans across the city.
Have the tides turned? Has English rose Lainie Graham made him into a new man?
Sources say the mismatched pair has been spotted at multiple events, arm in arm and hip to hip. From fits of jealousy to longing looks and heated whispers, onlookers are stunned by this blooming romance.
Could the rumors be right? Could this unlikely romance be the real thing? Or are these gifted stage actors playing us all?

Act Like It came highly recommended to me by a fellow blogger. Boy am I glad I listened to her! I fell in love with this book so fast and hard!
If you have a thing for enemies-to-lovers then you're in for a good time. Richard and Lainie do butt heads a lot because well, he's snobby, gruff and above it all, right? And she's down to earth and all around fabulous. A media darling who could rescue the guy in desperate need of a public image makeover so the powers that be have determined that they should fake date. They're both equally appalled by the idea.. What made them work for me is how she sparred so well with him. She never backed down whenever he got too smug and she met him word for word. In fact, I thought she had great comedic timing. I know it's odd to say that when I'm talking about reading a book but Lainie and Richard were so clear in my mind that I could see them in motion. She cracked me up a lot and I love that she's a strong woman who refuses to be anyone's doormat.
The chemistry between Richard and Lainie is, as my teens would say, fire! I mean, throw an English accent on a guy and picture him as Richard Armitage (I do that with almost every British male character for some reason) and I'm a total goner. They're so suitably matched for each other and the sexy moments are swoon-inducing and they fade to black which makes them even sexier.
I haven't had a chance to read further into the series but you bet I plan on it. Seriously, if you're looking for a spectacular romance with wit and humour, Act Like It should be your pick!

P.S. I adore the heck out of this cover!

What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera
* * * * *
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.
Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?
What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?
But what if it is?
Source: advance e-galley provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review
Before I get going I want to put this out there: I am an ardent fan of both Albertalli and Silvera. I love them for all the warm fuzzies and waterworks that their books bring on, and that the two of them have combined their superpowers to write a book together is nothing short of magical!
What If It's Us starts with a meet-cute at a post office of all places. Arthur sees a hot boy walking in to the post office with a large box. For a good-looking guy Arthur is willing to take a little detour and so follows him inside and strikes up a conversation with him. The boy, Ben is returning his ex-boyfriend's belongings and this gives Arthur hope that maybe Ben will be interested in him. Now before you go thinking he's being stalkery, Arthur is the sweetest guy who has only recently come out. He's never had a boyfriend before but his willingness to put himself out there is so darn admirable. Ben who's dated before is the one who's hesitant. Arthur is the kind of guy who believes in fate but before things can go any further they're abruptly separated and all they have is the other's first name. They do eventually find each other (social media to the rescue!) and then they embark on a series of dates, some hits, some misses, getting to know each other along the way. They only have a limited amount of time as Arthur does have to head back to Georgia at the end of the summer. In the meantime, they're going to have the best summer ever.
The story that unfolds is definitely the best of both worlds with Albertalli and Silvera taking us on an adventure as Ben takes Arthur around New York and Arthur learns the ins and outs of dating. What's interesting, too is the parallel subplots happening with regards to their own friends. Arthur's wondering if his coming out has negatively impacted his once close friendships back home and Ben's trying to figure out his own friendships which may or may not include being amicable to his ex.
There's so much joy in reading What If It's Us. I was expecting to cry because let's face it, Silvera has a history of doing that to us but that wasn't the case this time. This is a heartfelt, coming-of-age story and I was especially touched by the ending. I love it because only is it realistic, it offers such an open and optimistic view of love and life. Their time together in New York has changed them and you can witness that as Ben and Arthur mature into the impressive men they're becoming. You definitely need to add this to your reading list now!

The Royal Runaway by Lindsay Emory
* * * 1/2
For fans of The Princess Diaries and The Royal We comes a fun and daring novel about a modern-day princess who teams up with a spy to find out what happened to the fiancé who left her at the altar—and who just might get her own fairytale in the process.
Princess Theodora Isabella Victoria of Drieden of the Royal House Laurent is so over this princess thing.
After her fiancé jilted her on their wedding day, she’s finally back home after spending four months in exile—aka it’s back to press conferences, public appearances, and putting on a show for the Driedish nation as the perfect princess they expect her to be. But Thea’s sick of duty. After all, that’s what got her into this mess in the first place.
So when she sneaks out of the palace and meets a sexy Scot named Nick in a local bar, she relishes the chance to be a normal woman for a change. But just as she thinks she’s found her Prince Charming for the night, he reveals his intentions are less than honorable: he’s the brother of her former fiancé, a British spy, and he’s not above blackmail. As Thea reluctantly joins forces with Nick to find out what happened the day her fiancé disappeared, together they discover a secret that could destroy a centuries-old monarchy and change life as they know it.
Funny, fast-paced, and full of more twists and turns than the castle Thea lives in, The Royal Runaway is a fresh romantic comedy that will leave you cheering for the modern-day royal who chucks the rulebook aside to create her own happily-ever-after.

Royal romances can be a hit-or-miss for me but The Royal Runaway is pure enjoyment! A jilted princess and heir to the throne left at the altar, her fiancé, Cameron, has gone missing, presumed dead, and a once thought to be dead brother who is in fact, very not dead, turns up to investigate why his brother has gone missing. All the ingredients for a royal-tastic misadventure!
I was honestly surprised by how the story played out. I assumed incorrectly that Thea would kind of self-destruct and fall in with the next guy to show up. Not sure why my thoughts went there but I was shown that I clearly had no idea. Instead, Thea is not so meek, and try as she might to forget Cameron as her family would have her do, she can't let go. There's just something odd about how it went down. Nick shows up and at first she thinks he's playing her but when he admits to being Cameron's long dead brother returned to life, she's not only intrigued but unhinged in a way because Nick's presence indicates that something has gone sorely wrong. Not one to stand aside and let everyone else do all the work, Thea insists that she and Nick work as allies to uncover the truth.
I liked the mystery surrounding Thea's fiancé and the danger that arose from digging into it. Nick, was sexy (I couldn't help but picture Gerard Butler because Scottish hottie action hero = Gerard Butler, right?). He and Thea exasperated each other most of the time but you knew where that was going. I mean, come on. Anyway, his dry humour was attractive. Thea herself was funny and smart and of course, rebellious. She and Nick sparred well together which was quite entertaining.
My only disappointment with the story is the revelation of the villain who felt one- dimensional to me. I was hoping for a bit more of a background but also understand that it makes sense why we wouldn't have much to go on beyond the reveal.
The Royal Runaway is a fun, action-filled romp. Throw in a delicious mystery and a budding romance and voila! You'll be kept guessing and entertained!

Exclusive Excerpt:
He can’t be back. It’s impossible.
My breaths come thick and fast as I run frantically down the road.
Peering around the edge of my hood, I check over my shoulder. I can’t see him.
But just because I don’t see him, doesn’t mean he isn’t there… biding his time.
Hopelessness shrouds me as reminders of him continue to attack my
mind. Blake… he can’t be here. He can’t be back. It’s impossible. The
rushed pounding of my boots landing on the concrete causes my panic to surge. I
want to cry out but what if he hears me?
Stumbling the last step to the house, I drop my keys and shopping
bag to the ground below, the contents spilling over the path around my feet. A
sob catches in my throat as I desperately pick up the key. I have to get
inside, away from him. Raising my right hand, I try to steady the trembling
with my left. When the key slides into the lock and the click sounds, I push on
the door with all my weight, almost falling inside.
Leaving the shopping splayed outside, I spin around and slam the
door closed. The echo reverberates around the small hallway, but I don’t pause
for a second. I twist the lock and jerk the chain across. Only then, as I lean
back against the door, do I fight to take control of my breaths.
How can this be happening? How can he be here?
My head judders from side to side in a state of shock and
disbelief. The first tear forms before more follow, falling to my cheek.
The freedom I’ve had a taste of is now at an end. He warned me it
would always be us, no matter what. He won’t let me go twice, and I know I
won’t be able to survive. Not again.
Hesitantly, I tread into the kitchen. The room appears
uncharacteristically dark, but I don’t put on a light. I don’t want to be seen.
My focus flitters from corner to corner, door to door, searching for anything
that is out of place—but everything appears to be how I left it.
I move towards the window, standing back as far out of sight as I
can. Gently, my fingers slide in between the blinds so I can peer outside.
Dark clouds make their way across the sky, droplets of rain are
starting to fall again, and the trees sway with the impending storm that’s been
predicted. I scan over the few people that are walking down the path on the
opposite side of the road.
When I don’t see him, I look beyond, to the open fields.
“Where are you?” I say out loud. “You’re dead. You’re supposed to
be dead!”
Withdrawing my fingers from the blinds, I move quickly to the
cutlery drawer and take out a sharp knife.
“Dead!” I whisper in desperation. The fear encroaches as I think
of the unimaginable and the possibility that somehow my husband is still alive.
I retreat until my back hits the wall. Like I did months ago when
I knew he was near. When I knew it was time.
I tighten my grip on the cold metal of the knife knowing that this
time, I have no choice but to be ready for him.
My mouth feels dry, and I lick my lips reliving what fear feels
like. The hairs on the back of my neck now stand on end and my heart thumps
louder, taking over the silence.
My legs slowly start to give way, and I slide down the wall as a
broken sob rips from my chest.
I thought the nightmare had ended, but as I sit, gulping back my
cries in an attempt to remain quiet, I fear it’s only just beginning.
My husband is back, and there’s only one reason he’s here. For me.
When a voice calls out, my body jolts against the wall. The
letterbox rattles as he calls my name through the opening.
My fingers tighten around the knife in my palm. He won’t hurt me.
Not again.
