For Finlay Teaser 2

About J. Nathan:

Nathan is the author of the new adult novels For Finlay, Before Hadley, Until Alex, and Since Drew. When she's not writing, she's a total romance junkie! Add an alpha male who's unlikable in the beginning...even better. Happy endings are a must. Love triangles and negative people are the bane of her existence. Her family, friends, guys in backwards hats, and watermelon margaritas are the light…

What is it about cocky college jocks that get us so excited? Perhaps we like when they meet their match in fiery, independent women they fall for? I think that's it for me.

Finlay is a heartbroken freshman who's attending the school that her brother should be at. But he's not there and she is. So she resolves to live out his dream for both of them. Finlay sees it as repentance for the way their relationship went south. Caden, the star quarterback, is the focus of all her ire. He doesn't know why but he likes that she's feisty and doesn't take crap from anyone, including the guys on the football team. If anything, it's refreshing that she speaks her mind and doesn't glom on to everything he says and does the way most people do, especially girls. Especially his girlfriend. The fact that she knows and understands football only adds to her cool factor. Too bad she finds him repulsive. Or so he thinks. Finlay works hard to keep him at a distance but even she can't resist that he's fundamentally a decent guy. But she won't divulge too much about herself because that's personal and the truth is too painful. Developing a friendship with Caden feels like the ultimate betrayal to the memory of her brother. Sheesh, things are complicated.

This is my third J. Nathan novel and I pounced on the opportunity to read it. There's something different about her new adult novels that I like. In this case, I liked how she wrote Caden. Sure, he's a bit cocky and his innuendos are typical of a jock I suppose, but he's a good guy from the get go. Most importantly, is he's not a player. So when he finds himself falling for a particularly smart but stubborn water girl, he makes the necessary changes in his life to accommodate that. Don't get me wrong, he's a knucklehead, too but then so is Finlay, and their stupidity comes into play later. The in between is filled with sexual tension, humour, and bittersweet memories.

I liked For Finlay; it's a quick, fun read that also has its emotional moments. And I will always say yes to a J. Nathan book.

The Goal (Off-Campus #4) by Elle Kennedy

* * * *

She’s good at achieving her goals…

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

We were left with a doozy of a cliffhanger at the end of, The Score, when Tucker announced out of the blue to his friends that he was going to be a daddy. And then we all had to pick up our collective jaws off the floor when we found out who the baby mama was. Yeah, Elle Kennedy was a big meanie for doing that to us but we know that she always comes through and holy cow, what a story!

In The Goal, we rewind back to where it all started between Tucker and Sabrina. Yes, THAT Sabrina! The much-despised nemesis of his good friend and teammate, Dean. Tucker is the quiet one amongst his friends and not as much of a player but he certainly notices Sabrina one night. She is out at the urging of her friends so she can actually relax and have fun for a change. Below the bitchy exterior which she doesn't mind fronting, is a hard-working, ambitious young woman whose goal is to get into Harvard Law School. Her busy schedule between classes and her jobs don't leave her with much leisure time. Her primary focus is to be able to sustain and support herself. Her background serves as a good reminder that judging someone on the surface never gives you the entire picture. If anything, I admire Sabrina's grit. And so does Tucker. He likes her drive and her independence, and gets a glimpse of the real person she allows few people to see. They have what they think is a one-night stand that becomes a sort of friendship-with-benefits situation. Then, bam - they're having a baby! Nevermind that Sabrina is still conflicted about her feelings for Tucker. He's fully aware of her boundaries and doesn't want to scare her away so he follows her cues, even though he badly wants to jump in and help. Therein lies their problem - they haven't been together long enough to understand each other or to even speak freely about what they want.

While there are funny lines and moments including a reference to a ridiculously hilarious scene in The Score, The Goal feels much more mature as they're forced to grow up sooner than expected. The prospect of being young parents as they're approaching graduation is such an overwhelming undertaking. The tension is worsened by the fact that they're not sure what the other is thinking half the time. There are moments during the pregnancy when they're learning what lies ahead that are giggle-worthy but overall, the weight of their responsibility is always there. I've had kids and though I've never been to law school, I have friends and family who have, and knowing what they endured that first year alone, had me feeling the stress on Tucker and Sabrina's behalf!

I love stories where we're allowed to delve deeper into someone's personality to learn what makes them tick. I especially like the ones where we're surprised by a character we thought we knew. Learning how strong Sabrina is and has always been was one of the great joys of reading The Goal. And we all know we also read these books because of the guys in it, and Tucker will not disappoint you. He is a decent guy who adores his woman and is always willing to give. Garrett, Logan, Dean - they're great but Tucker is sexy as hell and is THE forever guy. More impressive is that it doesn't take an unexpected pregnancy for him to become that. It's in his nature. So ladies, get ready to fall hard!

The Girl Next Door by Amy Jo Cousins

The Girl Next Door (Bend or Break, #3)
When it comes to love, go big or go home.

Charles “Cash” Carmichael traded his high-rise condo and family-firm career for a job coaching soccer for Chicago’s inner-city kids. He’s adjusting to living on minimum wage when his young cousin, newly out and running away from home, shows up on his less-than-luxurious doorstep.

Angsty teens definitely aren’t Cash’s thing. He needs local backup, and there’s only one name he can think of: Stephany Tyler. Back in the day, the bisexual Steph was the perfect friend with benefits until she fell in love with a woman.

To his relief, his former friend steps up to the plate. Soon, though, Cash finds himself feeling the familiar need to keep her in his bed, and in his life. But Steph, burned by the ex-girlfriend and by the absentee dad she’s been trying to connect with, won’t risk her heart again.

Good thing Cash believes in leaving it all on the field. If he can just convince Steph to get in the game, there’s a chance they can both win.

Warning: This book contains ex-friends with benefits crossing boundaries a second time, several steamy encounters on staircases, copious discussions about gay sex from a “straight” guy, a shout-out to magic buttons, and an especially memorable going away threesome.

Review:

I had to laugh at the warning for this book.  One, because most of the warnings that come on books published by Samhain make me giggle, and two, because it gives the idea that this book is all sex.  And it’s not.  There are some steamy scenes in it for sure.  And I can’t say that I’ve read a threesome in any other New Adult novel (or adult novel for that matter outside erotic romance). But Amy Jo Cousins fits it in seamlessly without ever making the reader feel like they’ve crossed into something unexpectedly steamier.

If you’ve read Off Campus (by now we all know I’m a huge fan) you are familiar with Cash Carmichael.  The clueless kindhearted friend that insists on staying in Tom’s life and who effortlessly draws Reese in too.   It’s been a few years since graduation and Cash has chosen to ditch his comfy parent provided job for a minimum wage non-profit position bringing sports to inner-city kids in Chicago.   A huge adjustment but Cash adapts easily.  Which is a good quality to have when his 17 year old cousin, Denny, shows up at his apartment looking for a place to stay.  Denny has just come out to his parents and they think he is just looking for attention.  The one person that Denny thought might take him seriously is Cash.  Cash wants to give Denny what he needs but he’s not quite sure what that is. So he brings in the troops.  The troops being his best friends Tom and Reese.  But they are still in Boston and can’t come out to help for a couple weeks.  In the interim, Cash enlists the help of the one person he’s been avoiding since he found out she moved to town.  His bi-sexual friend, Steph.  More memorable to him as his former friend with benefits.  Also the girl that got away.

When Cash meets Steph for dinner he finds the friendship that was so strained before naturally reappears.  Steph doesn’t hesitate to help out and it doesn’t take long before she and Cash are re-instating their friends with benefits relationship.  The difference is that Cash doesn’t want a casual thing.  For him this is the real deal.  But he knows Steph.  And he recognizes her issues with abandonment.  Mix that with Cash’s fear of being cast aside like last time and he decides to slowly work his way into her heart.  He just needs the time to convince her that he’s worth forever.

There are so many things to love about this book.  The biggest thing being Cash himself.  The story is told from his POV (third person) and he is just such a….DUDE.  And when you read it you will understand why that is hilarious.   He’s funny, kind and completely aware of his cluelessness.  This might be my favorite quality of his.  He KNOWS that it sometimes takes him longer to process information.  And he’s so embarrassed by it.  But he has a few tricks up his sleeve to hide that from people and I found it endearing.  His relationship with each of his friends (Denny included) really shows that he’s the glue that holds them all together.  Really there is nothing to dislike about the guy.

Steph is amazing.  I loved her since the moment she threatened Tom in Off Campus.  She’s feisty and she has a huge heart.   A huge heart that’s been broken a few too many times.  She’s also naughty.  Much like her BFF, Reese, Steph is a bit of an exhibitionist, which allows for some fun steamy scenes.  It definitely helps that Cash is pretty much open to anything and everything.

If you’ve been following this series from the beginning you’ll enjoy the reappearance of Tom and Reese.  And if, like me, you started this series by reading Level Hands (Bend or Break #4), you’ll enjoy seeing how Denny and Rafi meet each other.  It was adorable to witness the start of their relationship through Cash’s eyes.

This series has been a joy to read and The Girl Next Door was the perfect sweet and happy remedy needed after experiencing the angst of the first two books.  Each one of these books have made it to my comfort read shelf.  I am not ashamed to admit I’ve read Off Campus three times in the past three months.  If that’s not a comfort read I don’t know what is.  It just hits the spot.  The best part is that the series isn’t over.  Look out for our review of Real World (Bend or Break #5) which comes out in November.  If you are a Tom/Reese fan you will love reading this novella about them 5 years post-graduation.
