On Broken Wings by Chanel Cleeton Review Tour

* * * 3/4

The author of Into the Blue and Fly with Me returns with the newest, hot and high-flying Wild Aces romance...

A year after losing her husband, Joker, the squadron commander of the Wild Aces, Dani Peterson gets an offer from his best friend, Alex “Easy” Rogers, to help fix up her house. Dani accepts, and their friendship grows—along with an undeniable attraction.

Racked by guilt for loving his best friend’s widow, Easy’s caught between what he wants and can’t have. Until one night everything changes, and the woman who’s always held his heart ends up in his arms. Yet as Easy leaves for his next deployment, he and Dani are torn between their feelings and their loyalty to Joker’s memory.

But when Dani discovers something that sends them both into a spin, the conflicted lovers must overcome the past to navigate a future together…

Easy has no trouble getting the girl and he's had plenty of them. But none can hold a candle to Dani, the wife of his squadron leader, Joker. So he's loved her from afar all this time and tried to be as decent and reliable a friend as possible. But now that Dani is a widow, Easy is in a hopeless situation. He vows to do what he's always done: be there for whatever she needs. Still grieving her devastating loss, Dani is struggling to put herself back together. It helps that she has good friends looking out for her, especially Easy, who has been with her through good times and bad. But she's not ready for the complications that arise when she notices a shift in her feelings for him.

This is the one I'd been waiting to read. Easy was the steady but always anguished character in the background and I wanted desperately to understand why. Cleeton took a sensitive storyline that allowed us to get to know Easy outside of his well-crafted public persona. This is the Easy people don't get to witness: an unbelievably tender and patient man who's doing everything he can to make life easier for the fragile woman in front of him. He won't allow his true feelings to compromise anything because Dani and what she needs come first. Always. If only we could clone him! And Cleeton describing Dani's loss and how her grief could be triggered unexpectedly caused me to hold back a tear or two. I have no idea how I'd handle myself but I would certainly hope for the strong friendships expressed here. Easy and Dani's friendship does wind up taking off into uncharted territory with a surprising turn that adds some spice to their storyline.

The romances, camaraderie, losses and heartbreaks have shown that the Wild Aces are a loyal bunch, devoted to each other, which is why I have enjoyed this series immensely. I can also attribute that enjoyment to Chanel Cleeton's style - a pleasant mix of sweet and steamy without going overboard. I'm always excited to read her work and out of this series, On Broken Wings has become my favourite!

Into the Blue (Wild Aces #2) by Chanel Cleeton

* * * 3/4

Eric Jansen—call sign Thor—loves nothing more than pushing his F-16 to the limit. Returning home to South Carolina after a tragic loss, he hopes to fix the mistake he made long ago, when he chose the Air Force over his fiancée.

Becca Madison isn’t quick to welcome Thor back. She can’t forget how he shattered her heart. But Thor won’t give up once he’s set his sights on what he wants—and he wants Becca.

Thor shows Becca that he’s no longer the impulsive boy he used to be, and Becca finds herself irresistibly drawn to him. But will Thor be able to walk away from his dream of flying the F-16 for their love or does his heart belong to the sky?

Sometimes the hardest thing about writing a book review for an author I’ve been reading awhile is that I feel I have nothing new to say. Having a go-to author is akin to having a favourite comfort food or movie – you know it’ll always give you good vibes and that’s how I feel about Chanel Cleeton’s books.

Into the Blue is the second in her latest Wild Aces adult romance series about fighter pilots and the women they love and who love them back just as fiercely. Alpha males in jaw-dropping uniforms and dangerous missions aside, these men have reached the apex of their careers and are now searching for more out of life. In this case, Eric aka Thor, comes face-to-face with his past when he bumps into Becca ten years after he walked away from her. It’s an unexpected reunion and if anyone thinks that time heals all wounds, well then Becca did not get that memo. She’s still smarting from what she considers an ultimate betrayal when Thor chose his career over her. So seeing him again has her reliving all the hurt and bitterness. She goes into defensive mode, not wanting to give him the time of day whereas he wants to make amends. Becca is finally at a stage in her life where her hard-earned career is doing well so she doesn’t need Thor coming in and messing things up. He on the other hand, is still reeling from a tragedy that has left his head a mess and his performance at work suffering. Rather than putting his colleagues in harm’s way, he’s taking a break and heading back to his hometown. The fact that Becca still resides there has a bit to do with it but really he just needs to be back in familiar territory to find his footing again. Making things right with her is part of his healing process.

Once again, Cleeton has nicely balanced two individual stories, drawing these characters back together at a pivotal time in their lives. I found Into the Blue to be more complicated and not just because Thor is coping with loss. It’s also about how Becca’s career is equally important and how these matters factor into the possibility of them rekindling their relationship. As far as story lines, I prefer this one to the previous Fly With Me and it has much to do with Becca. I just connected to her better. I mean, I’ve never experienced some of the things she went through, but her desire for stability? Yeah, I got that. There’s also something I admire about her for not giving in so easily to Thor’s return. She’s wrecked but she’s hanging in there, waiting it out instead of making rash decisions about her future. As for Thor, I have to say he recognizes where he screwed up in how he handled leaving but I also like that he didn’t apologize for something that he needed to do in order to grow into a better person. And as with all Chanel Cleeton's books, let's not fail to mention the steamy moments that can make readers blush! These two can turn up the heat and it's absolutely gratifying!

If it's a gorgeous men in uniform fantasy you're looking to escape into then Into The Blue will definitely fulfill that for you. The Wild Aces romances feature adults who’ve gone through their wild stages and experienced life. Now it’s time to shift to the next phase. Speaking of - after the set up in the last two books, I cannot wait to hear Easy’s story next!

EXCERPT:

Eric’s hand felt warm against mine—warm and big. He squeezed, and even though he touched my fingers, I swore I felt an answering tightness around my heart, as though the power to crush it lay in the palm of his hand.
I wanted to pull back, had never intended to let him get this close, but here we were, and I didn’t move. The temptation was just too strong to ignore and it felt too good to have him hold my hand.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered again, his voice and eyes full of an emotion that spelled trouble.
This time I did pull back, too close to losing my heart. Too much time had passed, too much between us. I didn’t want to fall into the trap of thinking that this could be something again, of letting old feelings confuse me.
“I need to go.”
“Can we get dinner sometime, or coffee, or something?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“I know I don’t deserve for you to let me in again, not after what I did, but what if we just gave it a chance. If we took things slowly? What if we started as friends?”
I didn’t know how I was supposed to answer that one, what slow was with people who had the kind of baggage we did. We’d been engaged; I didn’t know how to pretend we were just two people getting to know each other. At the same time, I didn’t really know him. Not anymore. But what was the point of getting to know him if he was just going to leave again?
“What’s changed?”
“What do you mean?”
“What’s changed?” I repeated. “You’re back here, but what’s different? What’s the point? You’re going back to Oklahoma in a few weeks, aren’t you?”
He nodded.
“Then what?”
He shifted in his seat, his expression guarded. “Well, we have the deployment coming up, and then I’ll probably go on to my next assignment. I don’t know where yet.”
Yeah, I’d been here before.
“So nothing has changed. Not really.”
“I’ve missed you.”
I’d missed him, too. It wasn’t enough. It had been ten years. We’d been apart longer than we’d been together. It wasn’t like we could just hit “Play” and pick up where we’d left off.
“We still want different things.”
He didn’t answer me for a beat. “What if we didn’t want different things?”I froze. He knew me too well, knew just how to worm his way back in.
“Don’t try to make this about me. Don’t come back here with your ‘maybes’ and your ‘what-ifs’ and expect me to hang my future on it. I’ve been here before. I know how this goes. You’ve been back, what, a day? Do you honestly think that after everything we’ve been through, I’m going to trust that you want a future together? That you’ll actually choose me?
“I’m not going down this road with you again. I’ve been there and all it did was give me years of heartbreak. I don’t trust you anymore. There is no us. Not anymore.”
I grabbed my wallet, putting some cash on the table for my breakfast. I got up on shaky legs, not giving him a chance to respond, not sparing him another glance.
