The Hail Mary Review Tour

* * * * *

Sixteen years is a long time. In a marriage, it’s a milestone. On the gridiron, it’s a miracle. Reed Johnson wants more time for everything, but time is funny that way.

It can be cruel.

With a body that can’t quite take the hits it used to and a heart tired of being torn in two different directions, Reed is faced with a reality he’s not quite ready for—life without the game. He became a man under Friday night game lights and in college stadium tunnels, and without the grit and the glory that’s earned ten yards at a time, he’s afraid of what kind of man he’ll be.

But there’s more than a game at stake now.

Reed’s wife, Nolan, is afraid too. She’s seen what can happen when the love of her life pushes himself too hard, and she can’t escape the nightmares she relives after almost losing her entire world to one single play on the field.

There is no compromise when it comes to football. Same goes for the heart. You’re either all in, or you get crushed. For Reed and Nolan, the clock is ticking down. Time…it does that. One way or another, they’re going to have to make a choice.

This is their hail Mary.

This is win or lose.

I must've been lost in my own little world because I didn't realize that Ginger Scott had plans to unleash a third book in the Waiting Series on us. It was the best surprise ever and I was over the moon to have a copy land in my hands. Waiting on the Sidelines is in my Top 5 of YA books because of the intelligent and moving characters within. I was amazed by how Ginger Scott crammed in 4 years worth of teenage angst, joys and upheavals and demonstrably showed how much they matured by the end of the book. That personal growth continued in Going Long, following them through the college years.

It's many years after graduation now and Reed and Nolan are parents to a fifteen year-old daughter. Reed's been able to pursue a successful football career and Nolan has her own business of providing therapeutic horses to work with special needs kids. It seems like they've managed to carve out their own slice of heaven. But what's shown on the surface is a far different story from what's going on underneath. Miles apart and living in different cities, a family health crisis and Nolan raising their daughter on her own during the football season, have taken their toll on Reed and Nolan's marriage. Their communication is off, their intimacy as well, and it's made harder by the fact that Nolan has become worried that the game that Reed loves so much and lives for, could hurt him. And Reed doesn't know who he is without football, afraid that walking away from the game would mean losing his identity and direction. Contemplating the future is a scary thing and the present is just as scary, too.

It isn't knock out, drag down fights between them. It's the uncomfortable silences, the hesitant grab for a hand, or the desperate search for anything that brings a smile that's been missing for so long. Ginger Scott conveyed their distance through exceptional imagery that got me in the gut. I remember one of those was Reed taking a glance at their closet, noticing how his and her clothes are at two opposite ends with a huge space in between. For him, it represented the current state of their relationship. When I read that, I got what it meant to him immediately and how much work they had before them to rectify whatever chasm came between them. The story is also about how their vision of of their family life has gone differently. They're simply out of sync and need to find their way back to each other. While they're on shaky ground now, the happier moments are presented through flashbacks that remind Reed and Nolan of why and how they fell in love. Those flashbacks are fun for readers who were there with them the first time around.

I know a lot of fans did a quick reread of the first two books in anticipation of the release of The Hail Mary. I had thought about doing that but then decided against it because I wanted to have that feeling of time having passed and memories being a little faded. I think that helped me get into Reed and Nolan's current mindset better. I think what I love most about The Hail Mary is that the characters stayed true to themselves. They don't lead the kind of lives we've come to associate with fame and wealth. Where they are now feels true to who Reed and Nolan are and have always been. It was a beautiful read, exactly what I knew I'd get from Ginger Scott. Reed and Nolan are one of my favourite couples and will always be precious to me.

Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him

sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

Review

* * * *

When it comes to writing raw, gritty stories, Ginger Scott does it so well. I barely have to read the blurb to know that I'll read her latest no matter what. With Cry Baby, she moves me out of my comfort zone - my quiet, suburban neighbourhood - and transplants me in one that frankly scares the hell out of me. A world where violence is commonplace and lives are automatically tainted by it. Where a smart, sweet kid like Tristan grows up connected to a gang and does just enough to stay under the radar to survive. School, as much as he tries to be indifferent about it, is his saving grace by giving him a sense of normalcy. But he doesn't know what to do with an adult's kindness or belief that he is smart enough to have a future beyond the life he knows. Then a ballsy, beautiful girl moves in down the street and things start to change. Riley's not fearful of her rough new neighbourhood or of the people who live there. That outspoken makes her stand out and maybe that's not such a good thing for her if she wants to stay safe and out of trouble in this area. She wants to be his friend, play ball and be included but he'll have none of that for her sake. He can't drag her into his world even by casual association. But Riley is tough as nails and won't give up on him so how can he resist the pull of someone who believes in him wholeheartedly?

This is a bleak story for the most part simply because of the world it's set in. But Riley who's like a freak storm coming in with ideas, challenges the status quo whether it's at school or on the basketball courts, and makes things happen. Her storyline gives the plot a forward momentum. When she and Tristan face off it's like there's a split screen in front of you; that if he just takes her hand and steps to the other side he could be a happier person able to dream for himself. Obviously it's not as easy as that but I needed to cling to that hope for him. And if there's one thing I love about Ginger Scott is that she writes about strong females who face their fair share of adversity in some form or another. Riley is her own playmaker, a master of her own life and doesn't succumb to self pity. I felt like I could she her demolishing every wall Tristan put up and it's fun to have these two polar opposite personalities have such friction between them. The suckerpuch comes when you realize how far reaching the destruction at the hands of the gang can be.

Ginger Scott is a an autobuy and autoread for me. Unafraid of tackling issues, Cry Baby is proof that she knows how to write about kids facing impossible odds, who are ultimately fighters and creators of their own destiny.

Excerpt

The room is so quiet that every small sound sends a jolt of urgency through my body. The refrigerator motor kicks on…then off. The heater rumbles and buzzes a loose vent cover in the hallway. A cricket hidden somewhere inside echoes.
“You get like that when you live here,” he says, bringing me back to the surface.
“Huh?” I shift my gaze to him and he steps close again, this time sitting on the couch, our knees nearly touching as he turns to face me.
“Paranoid, I guess.” His eyes move between mine as I nod, kind of understanding.
Tristan clears his throat then slides against the corner of the couch, gaining a few precious inches of distance. Probably for the best since we can’t be friends.
“You want to listen to some music?” I ask.
He chuckles lightly and cocks one brow, relaxing his expression when he sees that I’m serious.
“Oh…uhm,” he glances around the empty home. I get why—he wants to be able to hear what’s happening…out there.
“I’ll keep it low. I just thought maybe it would help…I don’t know…pass the time you have to sit here with me? You know, since it’s so awful and we aren’t friends.”
My expression grows hard. That was passive aggressive, but I’m still glad I said it. I see him wince, just barely, and I’m satisfied.
“Music’s good,” he finally says.
I pull my phone from my pocket and open my favorite playlist, starting it then setting my phone on the back of the couch. It’s a mix of everything, which is what I was raised on. My dad’s more of the country and oldies type of guy, and my mom like hard rock. I love pop and rap and pretty much anything, so it works. The first song that plays is from the eighties.
Tristan smirks, then turns my phone toward him so he can read, half laughing.
“Hey, I saw your lips moving with the words to that. You can’t make fun of me when you know the words,” I say, mouthing too-ra-loo-ra along with him.
His mouth curves slowly, and when it’s finally smiling for real, everything in the room shifts.
We begin to sing together, both messing up verses in our own ways, nowhere even close to being on key. When the next song starts and it’s country, Tristan groans, but I catch him mouthing the words to this one as well. I throw a nearby pillow at him and he catches it at his chest, holding it to his body and laughing until the sound fades out and we’re both just looking at each other.
Country turns into Elvis, and Tristan’s lip ticks up on one side as he blinks and looks down. His gaze doesn’t fall for long, though, and in a breath he’s studying me again.
“Careful, we might become friends,” I tease. He doesn’t laugh, and his grin falls a little, losing the dimples on his cheeks. I shouldn’t have said that. He took it seriously.
“Every single time I hear a car drive by, I assume it’s someone coming to kill me.”
My throat goes dry at his words, and my heartbeat pounds in my gut. His eyes flirt with me, moving to and away while he chews at the inside of his cheek. I’m frozen on his face, but in the periphery, I can see him wringing his hands.
He looks up and lets his breath slip away until his lip hangs open and his features droop, almost desperate. It’s a surrender.
