Undone By You Spotlight & Giveaway

* * * * *

USA TODAY bestselling author Kate Meader brings her signature “steamy sex scenes, colorful characters, and riveting dialogue” (RT Book Reviews) to this novella in the Chicago Rebels series, following the general manager of the Rebels as he scores with one of his players off the ice.

Dante Moretti has just landed his dream job: GM of the Chicago Rebels. And screw the haters who think there should be an asterisk next to his name because he’s the first out managing executive in pro hockey. He’s earned the right to be here and nothing will topple him off that perch—especially not an incredibly inconvenient attraction to his star defenseman, Cade “Alamo” Burnett. Cade has always been careful to keep his own desires on the down low, but his hot Italian boss proves to be a temptation he can’t resist. Sure, they both have so much to lose, but no one will ever know...

As Dante and Cade’s taboo affair heats up off the ice and their relationship gets more and more intense, they’ll have to decide: is love worth risking their careers? Or is this romance destined to be forever benched?

Note: this is a long-ish novella of approximately 40,000 words set in the Chicago Rebels world.

* * * * *

If there's one thing Cade and I have in common it's that neither one of us can resist a hot Italian in a suit. Except Cade is the lucky guy (jerk, I mean...what? ... he's a sweetheart) who gets to have that fantasy come true in this tension-filled and steamy romance set in the world of high testosterone and homophobia.

If you've been reading along in the Chicago Rebels Series, you'll already know the backstory but quick synopsis for those who are new: the Rebels are owned by three half-sisters who inherited it from their misogynistic and furiously ambitious father who stipulated in his will that if the team did not have a successful season then they would lose ownership of it. Some are all for the idea of three women owners, some are indifference and the remainder are hostile and rooting for them to fail. Dante is hired on, impressed by the organization and its leadership. He also knows a thing or two about shaking things up as the first openly gay hockey player. Being older and wiser has its benefits and he ignores the naysayers, proving that his knowledge and experience are the perfect fit for a team that needs to win. Cade hasn't come out of the closet yet but his attraction to Dante has him making some careless decisions about his own personal safety.

This is where I completely lost it for Dante. Rather than taking advantage of the inexperienced Cade and just going for it, he's more mentor-like at the beginning. He's been where Cade has been and understands the perils of being gay in the sports world. He also knows how much one can lose in their private life from coming out. The fact that he's older lends the story maturity and a contrast to Cade's eager-eyed, puppy dog swooning. He's also sensual in the way he speaks, moves and behaves. But even this gorgeous man  can't resist Cade's genuine soul and good looks. These two together are on fire and I wanted more of them.

The great mystery of my life is how many sports romances I read, particularly hockey yet I don't watch the sport. I don't think it's diminished any joy I find in reading them but it does strike me as funny. I love how Kate Meader builds on this tension here then levels it cautiously because there is that potential for so much pain should things go south when there's so much at stake. I also loved all the little gaps she fills in that were brief mentions in the previous books. It's nice to be able to put particular scenes together from different angles now that I have the additional POVs. Undone By You is a quick, happy read with plenty of emotion, sexiness and laughs. My heart swelled with this one and so far it's my favourite of the series. The image of Dante in a suit certainly helps ;)

Are you ready for an excerpt from Undone By You?
(Psst ... this is the scene that sealed it for me!)

Cade turned and almost dropped the frame.

Apparently, Dante had been working on more than just dish-clearing and dessert prep in the kitchen. A wardrobe change had occurred, and man oh man, were the results spectacular. The addition of a tie, vest, and jacket meant Dante was now dressed in a hot-shit suit.

I repeat. Dante Moretti is dressed in a hot-shit suit.

“You guys close?”

“We were. He died nine years ago.”

Nine years ago, around the time Dante came out publicly. The death of his grandfather was related to his decision somehow.

Dante placed a half-drunk glass of wine on a side table, shot his cuffs, and picked up his wine again. For the length of a long sip, he never took his eyes off Cade.

Cade couldn’t speak. Watching Dante watch him had evicted all rational thought.

“There’s cannoli in the kitchen,” the chef murmured, “but it needs time to get to the perfect eating temperature.”

Cannoli? Who the hell cares about cannoli when every freakin’ one of Cade’s fantasies was standing before him? “You changed.”

“You like when I wear a suit, don’t you?”

Cade nodded, his tongue too thick to respond. Dazed, he started at Dante’s shiny shoes and worked up slowly. Having seen the man’s thighs in the gym, Cade was hard-pressed to decide whether those bare, hairy pillars of temptation were better than the winter wool-covered tree trunks he saw now.

Cade took his time moving up, needing to savor every moment. Trim hips, narrow waist, and a thickening—under his very eyes—bulge in the crotch of his suit pants. The three buttons of his vest were done up, a slight disc-shaped lump in the pocket. It held an old-fashioned watch on a chain, the links of which draped at the side.

This crazy detail would have pronounced anyone else a pretentious asshole, but not Dante. It was elegance and style and placed the man in a league above. A dark blue tie matched Dante’s eyes. His broad shoulders filled out the jacket perfectly. There wasn’t a single thing Cade would change except . . .

Abandon. Cade planned to change Dante’s cool expression to one of utter and complete abandon.

Dante set the wineglass down and walked over, stopping a foot from Cade. His gaze dipped to Cade’s mouth, heated promise building in his eyes with each passing second. Another step, and he took the photo out of Cade’s hands and set it back on the mantel.

One thumb rubbed over Cade’s cheekbone. Just that one stroke, unbelievably sensual, and Cade was a mess.

Can’t breathe. Can’t . . . breathe. Can’t—

Cade managed to suck in a breath and on exhaling, Dante leaned in and licked the corner of his mouth. Oh, sweet Jesus. Some weird, garbled sound came out of him. But whatever it was made Dante smile, and then his lips moved over Cade’s slowly, building a fire, stealing all sense. Breaking Cade down to a cellular level. His hand found anchor at Cade’s nape, a gloriously possessive gesture, and Cade knew in that moment he’d give this man anything, anything, he wanted.

Not even last night’s win in New York could compare to the pulse spike when Dante’s lips took control. His tongue slipped in and licked inside, all sweet, dirty promise, blasting the fantasy to fragments and hurling it beyond Cade’s admittedly very active imagination. If this was what the kiss was like, how the hell was he going to survive the sex?

And hello, it looked like sex was back on the menu.

Irresistible You (Chicago Rebels #1) by Kate Meader

* * * 1/2

Three estranged sisters inherit their late father’s failing hockey franchise and are forced to confront a man’s world, their family’s demons, and the battle-hardened ice warriors skating into their hearts.

Harper Chase has just become the most powerful woman in the NHL after the death of her father Clifford Chase, maverick owner of the Chicago Rebels. But the team is a hot mess—underfunded, overweight, and close to tapping out of the league. Hell-bent on turning the luckless franchise around, Harper won’t let anything stand in her way. Not her gender, not her sisters, and especially not a veteran player with an attitude problem and a smoldering gaze designed to melt her ice-compacted defenses.

Veteran center Remy “Jinx” DuPre is on the downside of a career that’s seen him win big sponsorships, fans’ hearts, and more than a few notches on his stick. Only one goal has eluded him: the Stanley Cup. Sure, he’s been labeled as the unluckiest guy in the league, but with his recent streak of good play, he knows this is his year. So why the hell is he being shunted off to a failing hockey franchise run by a ball-buster in heels? And is she seriously expecting him to lead her band of misfit losers to a coveted spot in the playoffs?

He’d have a better chance of leading Harper on a merry skate to his bed…

All right, folks. There's a plethora of hockey romances out there so what makes this one different? Answer: a little Cajun spice.

Remy or "Jinx" has his peers call him is on the brink of retirement but first he needs to do one more thing before that happens: win the Stanley Cup. And he thinks it'll happen with his current team. But a certain, newly-minted owner of the Chicago Rebels has other ideas. She trades for him to join the Rebels hoping that his work ethic and experience will fire up her team and take them from Loserville to hoisting that much sought-after piece of hardware. It looks great on paper but in real life it's going to require a great amount of effort on Harper's part to convince Remy that this is a good move. She even strikes a bargain with him without informing her half-sisters, who are the other co-owners of the Rebels, about this. While Remy may be resistant to the trade it doesn't mean he is impervious to the hotness that is his new boss, Harper Chase. The woman has a confident, don't-mess-with-me-or-I'll-knee-you-in-the-balls vibe and that only makes Remy hungry to get closer to her. As the new owner of the Rebels, Harper has much to prove in a little amount of time. Not only does she need to get her organization running smoothly again but she and her sisters have to fulfill the terms of her late father's will in order to keep control of it. Everyone from the media to the public to other organizations is looking to see them fail, Harper especially. So she won't let a little inconvenient attraction to her team's latest acquisition sideline her momentum. The boss can't mess around with one of her employees because that would be unprofessional and hurt her credibility but ...

Firstly, there's a lot of heat throughout most of this book. Remy is an imposing figure, all masculinity and charm. It helps that he drops those lovely French phrases and terms of endearment regularly. I was pleasantly surprised by his backstory and what his anticipated plans are for after his retirement. His line of thinking was not something I was expecting from a pro-athlete who has it all from luxuries to women thrown at his feet. I did get a kick out of how he started to bond with his teammates. Some of them don't have quite the finesse he has but he seemed to take to his role of being a leader seriously. Secondly, I felt for Harper. Like most females in the workplace, she's in a precarious position. Meader provides plenty of Harper's backstory and examines how any woman taking on a leadership role within a company faces skepticism from her counterparts about her worthiness or effectiveness at her job. A woman has to work 10 times harder to prove her detractors wrong. I personally had reservations about her and Remy hooking up but then there wouldn't be a story if they didn't. And because their relationship is forbidden it only makes their "magic time" hotter. Let me tell you, that stroll down a New Orleans street was quite something memorable!

I had a great time reading Irresistible You. It's naughty, fun and I mentioned naughty, yes? Allow Remy to add some spice to your reading list :)

P.S. I got to meet Kate Meader at RT17 back in May and she was so delightful and sweet. I had to share this pic of us! It was taken after a very taxing and loud trivia game but it was oh so much fun ;)

Us (Him #2) by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

* * * *

Can your favorite hockey players finish their first season together undefeated?

Five months in, NHL forward Ryan Wesley is having a record-breaking rookie season. He's living his dream of playing pro hockey and coming home every night to the man he loves–Jamie Canning, his longtime best friend turned boyfriend. There's just one problem: the most important relationship of his life is one he needs to keep hidden, or else face a media storm that will eclipse his success on the ice.

Jamie loves Wes. He really, truly does. But hiding sucks. It's not the life Jamie envisioned for himself, and the strain of keeping their secret is taking its toll. It doesn't help that his new job isn't going as smoothly as he'd hoped, but he knows he can power through it as long as he has Wes. At least apartment 10B is their retreat, where they can always be themselves.

Or can they? When Wes's nosiest teammate moves in upstairs, the threads of their carefully woven lie begin to unravel. With the outside world determined to take its best shot at them, can Wes and Jamie develop major-league relationship skills on the fly?

Warning: contains sexual situations, a vibrating chair, long-distance sexytimes, and proof that hockey players look hot in any shade of green.

As I write this, I have the cheesiest of grins that has not disappeared since I finished Us. I thought Him was pretty spectacular but with Us, the brilliant writing duo that is Bowen and Kennedy bring a whole new level of awesome!

Everything that we enjoyed about Him from the humor to the hot magic time is back. Things are better though not easier now that the honeymoon period is over. The difference now is having a relationship under stringent constraints. They both went into it agreeing that publicly acknowledging their relationship during Wes’ rookie year in Toronto would be unwise. The plan was to stay under the radar until Wes could formally come out at the end of the year along with the full support of the front office. Instead of being in love and enjoying their relationship, they’re “managing” it.

Us explores the dynamics of their relationship now that they’ve moved in together and how they’re handling the pressure from the time apart due to Wes’ constant travels, and the need for both of them to be secretive. Both suffer from insecurities: Wes wondering if Jamie will up and change his mind about being with him while Jamie feels embarrassment because he sees financial inequities in their arrangement. I felt most connected to Jamie’s story probably because his struggle with his identity as a person and a partner during this time resonated with me. How they conduct their relationship is directly tied to Wes’ career. Jamie’s not used to hiding himself and as a result he begins to feel isolated leading to resentment and confusion. Keeping things on the down low is not a healthy thing for either of them.

Complicating things would be one of Wes’ teammates moving into the same apartment building. People, you will love Blake! His larger-than-life persona is the much needed comic relief when things between our lovebirds get too tense. He also makes you nervous with his tendency to just barge in on the boys. But when he’s present, be prepared to double over laughing!

I enjoy reading M/M romances though in the past I’ve tended to go for the angst-filled tropes. Us (and Him before that) are different. The emotionally charged moments are balanced out by humor or exceptionally hot magic times. I did like seeing other aspects of their lives such as Wes in professional athlete mode and Jamie as a kids coach. There’s always that tiny bit of apprehension whether or not a sequel will deliver that magical thing we loved about the first book but also introduce something new to keep things interesting. Us is a success in both regards! Our boys are going to be okay.
