I was so excited to learn that Chanel Cleeton had another
book coming out. Between Shadows is different from both of her previous series –
International School and Capital Confessions – because this time Cleeton brings
us to spy school and it’s a dangerous venture!
I liked how the novel started with X on assignment. Its
vagueness left me guessing as to whether she was the hero or the villain. All I
gathered was that she’s hard-core, cynical and untrusting of everyone, save her
younger sister. They have lived at the Academy for years where their lives have
been mapped out for them. X dutifully follows the Academy’s directions and protocol
because it’s the only way she knows to ensure her and her sister’s safety.
Lately though X’s conscience is weighing on her. Living with
secrets, in secrecy day after day is taking its toll. She’s in for a mega
surprise when she’s presented with her next assignment and an unexpected
reunion with someone from her past. In seconds the lines are blurred and she’s
unsure of what is true. Luke, her blast from the past, forces
her to face the questions that she’s been unwilling to find the answers to much less ask in the first place. He
is single-handedly dismantling her well-ordered world. Trust
is not a bountiful commodity in her line of work, and with a younger sister to
look after, the stakes are extremely high. However, the temptation to unearth the
Academy’s secrets and uncover the truth about her own past are too strong for her not
to succumb to. She was already in a deadly line of work and now it seems that
their security is threatened.
What follows is a highly suspenseful game of
cat-and-mouse where X and Luke have to uncover who their real enemy is and
fight back. I had so much fun reading this; so much so that I even dreamed I was
in spy school and Cleeton was one of the directors. Yeah – I got THAT into it! I wish I could be as fearless and fit as X.
Cleeton is one of my “go-to” authors when I want something
romantic or naughty. There’s always been something accessible about her
characters and I was happy to see it be the case in this novel. X is loyal and
devoted. When you finally win her hard-earned trust, she’s exactly the kind of
person you want in your corner. Whether you’re a fan of Cleeton’s or enjoy stories about uncovering and destroying shady organizations, Between Shadows will certainly give you a thrilling ride!
