HOLD MY BREATH
NA Contemporary Romance-Stand Alone
BLURB:
I would know.
They say the average person can hold their breath under water for two full minutes when pushed to the extremes. Will Hollister has been holding his for years. The oldest of two elite swimming brothers, Will was always a dominant force in the water. But in life, he preferred to let his younger
brother Evan be the one to shine.
Evan got the girl, and Will…he got to bury all of the secrets. A brother’s burden, the weight of it all nearly left him to drown.
The daughter of two Olympians, my path was set the day my fingertips first touched water. My future was as crystal clear as the lane I dominated in the pool—swim hard, win big, love a Hollister.
My life with Evan burned bright. He gave me arms to come home to, and a smile that fooled the world into believing everything was perfect. But it was Will who pushed me. Will…who really knew me.
And when all of the pieces fell, it was Will who started to pick them up.
In the end, the only thing that matters are those few precious seconds—and what we decide to do while we still have them in our grasp.

Inspired by this year's Summer Olympics, Hold My Breath features Will Hollister and Maddie Woodsen, two fierce swim competitors training for the Olympics. Will and Maddie have history together. Their families were friends, and Will and his brother, Evan used to train with Maddie and her dad. Maddie eventually dated Evan but their romance came to a horrific end when the Hollister family was involved in a plane crash that left Will as the only survivor. Will coming back to train with Maddie and her dad, dredges up all the painful memories and things left unsaid. Will has always loved Maddie but stepped aside when he saw that his brother had won her heart. However, facing her now is harder than he thought it would be because of the secrets he had kept to himself.
Hold My Breath is supercharged with emotion between the competitiveness in the water and the tension between Maddie and Will. I liked getting into the mindset of a competitor seeing how their drive pushes them to excel and the dedication it takes to get there. As much as I liked that, I also liked exploring the strained relationship between Maddie and Will. While they try to keep some separation between them, the history they share is too strong to ignore and confronting it is the only way to move forward. In order to do that, it means that Will has to be completely honest with Maddie about something that impacts both of them. The only critique I'll give here is that Maddie's reaction to the truth is too good to be true because it's a big one and what she does next makes her a way bigger person in this situation that most people would be. In my case, she won me over.
As with all her stories, Ginger Scott succeeds at digging into her characters' personalities and giving us who they are at their very core. In Hold My Breath it's what motivates them, what haunts them, what energizes them but most of all what gives them purpose. The insurmountable odds that are in Maddie and Will's way seem impossible to overcome but they do. I'm always impressed by the journeys. If you're a Ginger Scott, fan, you'll be pleased with her latest. If you're new to her, welcome. You'll enjoy the writing and the feels. Oh, all the feels.
