SADIE
Okay, reposition feet hip-distance apart and centered on the mat. Inhale and let it all go on the exhale. I look over the balcony across the barren city and try to find perspective. What did the teacher say? Set your intention? My intention is to maintain a modicum of good health and to not go insane during self-isolation. Fingers crossed on both fronts. Getting some work done wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

“They locked down the fucking city, man!” The voice blocks me from finding my zen spot. Some big blond dude is pacing back and forth in the neighboring apartment. Guess we’ve all got to get our exercise one way or another. A nice quiet doctor owns the place, but he’s overseas right now. No idea who this guy is. The new cat sitter, maybe? If so, I hope Gloria housetrains him quickly because all of this shouty behavior is not okay. Not if I have to share a wall with him for the next few weeks.

My new neighbor’s voice lowers to a more tolerable level and I take a deep, calming breath before moving into my next pose. Much better. Despite having questionable balance and being new to this whole yoga thing, I’m not doing too badly. It’s weird how quiet the city is with everything on lockdown. Peaceful, almost.

“Two weeks! I’ll be stuck here for two weeks!” he rants once more.

Ugh.

Due to the architect’s penchant for floor to ceiling windows—perfect for letting in the light—I have quite the view of my new neighbor’s performance. Much angst. Such woe. Like we’re not all going to go stir crazy during lock in. Even if it has only just started. I for one can’t wait to see how many divorces and break-ups this causes. Call it morbid curiosity. Though, being a romance writer, my mind would be better served dwelling on the possibilities for true love in this situation.

A random casual hook-up turning into so much more due to weeks of forced interaction? Roommates bonding over newly revealed shared interests? Nuh. Roommates entering into a sex pact to stave off boredom! Now that could work. Broken beds and broken hearts. That’s how to get things done. With the requisite happy ever after at the end, of course.
“Excuse me!” he shouts, shoving a frustrated hand through his head of thick, wavy, dark blond hair. New phone call, I think. After all, you can’t yell at the same person all day long. How tedious would that be?

Call me distractible, but watching him is actually a hell of a lot more interesting than perfecting my Downward Dog or doing yet another inventory of my pantry. Damn Oreos. I could have sworn I had another package. Day one and I’m already out of my favorite snack. Just bring on the apocalypse already. Without Oreos my life is already functionally over.

“Are you kidding me!” The man sure has a set of lungs on him. Unfortunately, at this point, he about-faces and strides back into the apartment. Still yelling, of course, though I can’t quite make out what he’s saying.

On the plus side, in those blue jeans, his ass is a thing of wonder. Honest to God. In less pandemic-y times, I’d charge my friends a bottle of wine to come over and witness the beauty of that thing. So tight. So nice. I lick my lips. Impressively broad shoulders beneath his T-shirt too. When he paces back to the front of the apartment, I’m presented with a strong jawline, high forehead, and a nose that could be slightly crooked. At least, it will be in the book. Readers dig that shit. The hint of a complicated past with a dash of violence thrown in for good measure. Ideally, he’d have broken it defending a small child or rescuing puppies. A combination of the two, perhaps?

Yes, it’s a definite. Apart from the anger management issues, this guy is officially hot stuff. Not that I’m after an actual love interest. Just inspiration for the hero of my next book.

Which is when it hits me…big buff dude reveals surprisingly sensitive side to sexy single introverted neighbor during quarantine. Hmm. It has possibilities. I stop procrastinating and move onto the next pose, arms out in a T, legs wide, and a slow bend at the waist. I exhale, pondering the plot idea along with the thickness of his thighs. The way the denim lovingly embraces every inch of his musculature. It’s like it’s on a loop playing over and over in my head. Okay, maybe I’m a little sex starved. He can feature in my masturbatory fantasies as well. After all, he’s that kind of can-do, helpful guy. Or at least, he is in my mind. And that’s where the man will stay. At a safe and appropriate distance. For both the virus and my heart.

+ + + Review + + +

It's so cliche to say it now but these are strange times and we're doing everything we can to make it through each day without losing our minds. So we avid readers are resorting to books to find comfort in some of our favourite authors.

Love Under Quarantine wasn't the escape I thought it'd be because there are constant reminders about life under quarantine. Some of the information about COVID19 borders between informative and preachy now but I had to keep it mind that the story itself is set during the first few days of lockdowns around the country so it's all just starting. As for Evan and Sadie, I didn't feel any chemistry between them. Maybe because on one hand, it's forced proximity (which I'm normally a fan of) but in this case there's no choice but to stay put so they're stuck with each other. On the other hand, it's because they're stuck together, stranded on their respective balconies that they're getting to know each other. They're forging a real friendship while life has grounded to a halt. By his own admission, Evan admits Sadie's not the his usual type (his usual being fake boobs, fake tan, fake hair colour). Sadie is the opposite of that. While he's making a real friend, I just didn't feel a spark between them. They get along fine chatting out on the balcony and having interesting conversations before the relationship evolves into straight up creative sexy times.

Then are a number of subplots taking place. One, is the scandal that has Evan looking like a steroid-abusing drug dealer which has him defending his innocence and his multi-million dollar career and contract. So he's putting some energy into uncovering who has it out for him. Two, Sadie's a romance author who needs new inspiration for her latest book and guess who has become her muse? Then there's Sadie's strained relationship with her parents who insist she get back together with her selfish boyfriend. Fair warning: there's a COVID19-related death of a minor character that comes out of the blue. The timing of it in the story was so off that it left a bad taste for me.

I'm unfamiliar with Audrey Carlan's previous work so I can't speak to her part in this but this wasn't my favourite from Kylie Scott. She's a terrific writer - an auto-buy for me - and I usually love her snark and wit but I was not into this at all. It felt like the the goal was to incorporate every hot button issue about the quarantine AND throw in a romance AND a bit of a mystery that the story became redundant and disjointed. As much as I wanted to love this book, it didn't work for me.

Rich Boy was witty, exciting and had the most intense slow burn romance I’ve read in a long time. ” —Audrey Carlan, #1 New York Times bestselling author

But how can I be expected to resist a man who can quote Austen, loves making me laugh, and seems to be everything hot and good in this world?
Only there’s so much more to him than that.
Billionaire playboy? Check. Troubled soul? Check. The owner of my heart, the man I’ve moved halfway across the country to be with, who’s laying the world at my feet in order to convince me to never leave? Check. Check. Check.
But nobody does complicated like the one percent.
This is not your everyday rags-to-riches, knight-in-shining armor whisking the poor girl off her feet kind of story. No, this is much messier.

Excerpt

“You haven’t told me your story,” he says once we’re seated in a booth and have ordered.
“I finished my degree and realized it was basically good for nothing and there were next to no jobs available anyway. Or at least nothing that appealed. Teachers and librarians are fighting for every scrap of funding they can get while newspapers are folding. The publishing industry is going through serious cutbacks. Majoring in English Lit may have been a mistake.” I shrug. Truth is, I got stuck for various reasons. But this explanation is easier to swallow. “Figured if I was going to wind up serving then I’d like to do it somewhere I can walk along the beach now and then, without getting stuck in traffic for hours.”
He nods. “Makes sense.”
“I thought so. I’ll figure out what I want to do with my life eventually.”
“No rush. Good that you can take the time and space to figure things out for yourself without anyone pressuring you.”
“Just the student loans hanging over my head,” I say.
His answering smile is brief and small. “Grow up around here?”
“Close enough, San Bernardino,” I say. “What about you?”
“No, I’m half a country away from home and intend to keep it that way. Though maybe half a country away is still too close. I hear Iceland’s nice this time of year.”
I raise my brows in question.
“Family.” He shrugs. “What can you do?”
The waitress delivers our food, filling up the table with Beck’s order of half of the breakfast menu. Without hesitation, he proceeds to devour it all. If I ate that much, my ass wouldn’t fit in the seat.
“Want some?” He offers me a forkful of pancake, dripping with syrup. “It’s good.”
“I’m fine with my burger. Thanks.” And I’m curious as heck about his family, but pressing him further wouldn’t be polite. Dammit.
“So what are my future wife’s favorite hobbies and or interests?”
“Hmm.” I stick a fry in my mouth and chew, thinking it over. “Reading, films, music…the usual. You?”
“Lots of things.”
“Such as?”
“I don’t know…hiking, rock climbing. Stuff like that.”
“So basically I like to sit still and you’re all about being busy and athletic. We have nothing in common.”
“No. Wait. I can change,” he jokes. “Give me another chance.”
“You shouldn’t have to change.” I swirl another fry in some ketchup. “I’m sure you’re perfectly fine just as you are.”

Review

* * * *

This is very much an offbeat fairytale featuring a slow burn romance and a family that would fit perfectly amongst E! Entertainment’s long list of über rich types reality shows. I was a bit lost at the beginning because I felt like I was dropped into the story a few chapters in and missed the important bit where Alice and Beck first met and instantly hit it off. They just simply get on while he's working as a busboy and she's a waitress. He quotes Austen to her which is a surefire way to win her over as she was an English Lit major. He calls her "wife", they hang out after work but everything is very much above board. He doesn't try to squirm his way into her pants or make any other move though it's clear they're both into each other. He's living a bare bones lifestyle and is evasive about his personal life only saying that he needed some time to himself. Then someone in a snazzy suit shows up to tell him he’s needed at home and off he goes. He leaves an open invitation for Alice to follow him back to Colorado and .... she takes him up on it! Mind you, they've only known each other for a matter of a few days. Not weeks or months. Days. She throws all caution out the window to join him and the moment she boards a private jet she is literally dropped into another world.

The best way to approach The Rich Boy is to suspend all disbelief and not impose your own opinions as to how you think Alice should react or behave and just go with it. There were plenty of times when my mind went, “but...but...but...” and I had to shut it up and lose the judgment. The entire situation is bizarre and surreal, and it's crazy how easily Alice adapts to certain situations or even how unquestioningly some of his family accept her into the fold. There's a whole lot of eccentricity and privilege thrown around that'll make your eyes bulge out of their sockets but somehow it works. That's because Beck does mean well and Alice tries to hold onto the sassy person that she is, and they're surrounded by some quirky and spirited characters as well, so they're not entirely in their own bubble.

I am forever a Kylie Scott fangirl because of her humour. The Stage Dive and Dive Bar series are great examples of that. With The Rich Boy she embarks on a different approach, going for the more outlandish and something that really is far removed from most of our realities. Her humour is still there, the witty banter and smart heroines are still intact. This is different. It has a soap opera-reality show vibe, and as I said, suspend disbelief and enjoy the nuttiness.

The Rich Boy Sneak Peek

The Rich Boy - SP banner

The Rich Boy, an all-new sensational slow burn romance standalone from New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott is releasing March 9th, and we have the first sneak peek!

TheRichBoy EBOOK

Sneak Peek

“All of Me” by Billie Holliday comes on and we neither stop nor speak. We just keep moving to the music. My hands creep up to the back of his neck where his skin is bare and warm to the touch. His eyes are the most amazing shade of hazel. Like some lovesick fool I could stare into them for hours. I don’t think I’ve slow danced with someone since high school. Don’t get me wrong, there have been memorable times in my adult life. I’ve been given roses and taken to dimly lit restaurants. But being here with him is quickly becoming peak romance.
Next is “Lover” by Taylor Swift and we dance on. He doesn’t try to kiss me so I don’t make a move either. There’s no need for more just yet. Doing this, being this close, is beautiful. I want about a hundred more moments like this with him. Possibly a great deal more.
When the music stops we gradually still. And there’s this moment when it’s just me and him and the city around us seems perfectly silent. How good it is to simply be in his arms and to have the full focus of his attentions. To know that maybe, just maybe, I’m safe here with him. The chambers of my heart fill up with him, one by one, and it’s both wonderful and terrifying.
“That was nice,” he says in a low voice.
            “Yes, it was.”
He looks down, taking in the way our bodies are pressed together. “Baby Jesus would be appalled.”
“I do so hate disappointing infant gods.”
“You know, fifty years from now we’re going to look back on tonight and you’re going to regret not taking the opportunity to feel me up,” he says. “Just going for it and grabbing my junk like you own it.”
“Oh my God, Beck.” I laugh. “That was such a perfect romantic moment and you just killed it.”
“I did?”
“Dead and buried.”
He scratches at his head. “Well, shit. I was only being honest.”
“Of course you were.”
With a smile, he takes a step back. I miss him immediately. The heat and the feel of him. The warm and familiar scent of his body. Maybe I should have taken him home last night. Though this slower pace has a sweetness and heat I can’t help but enjoy. Despite the crazy things that come out of his mouth and the insane cravings he inspires in me just by existing. Damn the man.
“So,” he says.
I break out in gooseflesh from the way he looks at me. As if not only am I the only woman in the room (which I am), but quite possibly on the whole damn planet. As I’ve mentioned before, his attention is addictive.
“How about I get the mopping done and then take you on a second date to the diner?” he asks. “See if I can’t bring the romance back to our burgeoning long-term relationship.”
“A second date, huh?”
“It’s a big step, I know. But I think we’re ready. What do you think?”
I nod, my stomach turning upside down. “Let’s do it.”

“Your keys and security alarm code please, miss?” he asked, hand held out waiting.
It might have just been me, but we seemed to be standing awfully close together. It almost seemed weirdly intimate. Almost. No, my bad. Ziggy wore his usual professional façade with nary a hint of emotion on display. His gaze was shuttered, his bearing military rigid. It was definitely just me and my overactive imagination. Being vaguely attracted to your bodyguard was kind of a pain in the ass. Not that I couldn’t use the distraction right now. Ziggy continued to stand there patiently waiting.
“Keys. Right.” I rummaged inside my Balenciaga City bag. Designer goodies were not only a weakness of mine, but a happy perk of being in the industry and achieving some small fame.
“Ah, just a minute. They’re in here somewhere.” I pushed aside my purse, a cashmere shawl, tampons, a candy bar, some loose change, my small Chanel cosmetics case, a power bank, hair ties, pepper spray, a copy of the latest Sarah MacLean book, mints, a spare charging cable for my cell phone, the cell phone itself, Chapstick, Prada sunglasses case, my grandma’s rosary, dental floss, deodorant, a couple of pens, Kleenex, ear buds, water bottle, a USB stick, reusable straw, condoms, nail file, some old receipts, a travel size umbrella, hand sanitizer, lotion, a pair of pearl earrings, tweezers, Advil, a hair band, and some bobby pins.
“Sorry about this,” I murmured. “I know I put them in here when we left.”
He said nothing. A whole lot of nothing.
“Huh.” With a great sense of victory, I held up a bottle of nail polish. “I thought I’d lost this.”
One of his dark brows crept upwards. “I’ll have you know this color was limited edition. Little Death at Midnight by Oxley. You can’t buy it anymore.”
His lips did not move, but that damn eyebrow arched even higher as he leaned forward a little and took in the contents of my bag. I swear his eyes widened.
“Don’t you judge me. All of these things are necessary for my ongoing existence.”
“Of course they are, miss.”
The man was so judging me. Bastard. “You carry a koozie around with you, I see.”
“It pays to be ready to party, Mr. Thayer.”
