Awk-Weird Release Day & Review Blitz

There’s more to me than just being awk-weird. I own my own flower shop, have some great friends, and I have my eye on adopting the most adorable kitten. But sadly, hot guys don’t tend to be blown away by my trivia-spouting, dorky self.

So, when a Thor-lookalike who happens to be a professional hockey player hits on me at my bestie's wedding rehearsal party ... You better believe I climbed that tree like a cat. And the face that it happened not once, not twice, but three times? Yeah, that's pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a woman like me.

There's zero chance I'll end up ever seeing him again...right?

Until the pregnancy test comes up positive. What happens next?

Oh my God, I wish I knew...

Review:

If there's one thing I can count on from Avery Flynn it's her sense of humour that's always pervasive throughout her books. She writes charming, funny, and awkward so well that every book I've read of hers has been entertaining and always brings a smile to my face. Naturally I was all over it when it came to Awk-Weird, and come on, that's one brilliant title!

Tess and Cole meet the night before a wedding, neither of them are in a particularly great mood. She unwittingly gets pulled into a strange trivia game between Cole and his Ice Knights teammates. Cole and Tess are a super duo of crazy information and data. They're basically the phone-a-friend lifeline you want to keep in your back pocket.

Tess and Cole grew up with a lack of stability and adapted to their circumstances in different ways. Tess who bounced around family members as a kid felt the strain of trying to fit in and eventually developed a penchant for blurting out factoids as a way to cope. Cole's family moved around a lot and he found one thing gave him the stability he craved: hockey. These are the things that give them comfort, like a security blanket and explains plenty about their personalities and view about life. I like that Cole's not what one would expect of a popular athlete being a bit of a domestic guy who keeps a neat home, bakes to de-stress, would rather stay in and party it up, and most impressively, is a one-woman guy. Yeah, he's kind of a unicorn which makes me have massive heart eyes emojis for him. Tess' tendency to babble random facts when she's feeling awkward or under pressure is just a part of who she is, and her friends and Cole never make her feel bad about it. That Cole can keep up with her fast-working brain and match her intensity is freaking sexy. When she ends up pregnant thanks to their one-night stand and has to move in with him thanks to peculiar circumstances, his structured life and her spunky attitude clash often. It also upends his fantasy about his ex for whom he's still pining after hoping that their on again, off again relationship will be back on. Tess recognizes the temporary nature of their arrangement - she's used to temporary since that's been her entire experience growing up - so she's not exactly holding out hope that Cole will magically forget his ex and see her as a possible fixture in his life, even if she is pregnant with his baby.

Awk-Weird is such a sweet, entertaining and sexy read. I mean, we've got a a guy who looks like he could be Thor's brother and a woman who's gorgeous and both of them unbelievably smart. I also think it's wonderful that Avery Flynn has created a sensitive hero much like she did in Parental Guidance. These guys have insecurities that they're not proud of but they don't act out negatively because of them. I'm so grateful for that. And let's be honest that there's a little bit of Tess in all of us with our quirks and silliness seeking to belong. Together they make a positively charming couple. Throw in Kahn, Tess' cat from hell as Cole likes to put it, and you're treated to some funny scenarios.

Chapter 5

Suddenly, I hear Miles bellow, “There you are, Megan! Come over here and meet my best buddy, Sam! He’s technically my boss at Tire Depot, but I don’t like to remind him, or he gets a big head.”
I turn to shake hands with whoever Miles is talking to, and suddenly, I feel like I’ve been kicked in the nuts.
Or actually…the taint.
Yeah, this feeling right here…it’s too deep for a nut kick. This panic-seizing, gut-twisting, body-tremoring attack overwhelming all my senses has a taint kick written all over it.
Because I’m staring into the stunning blue eyes of my ice fishing companion from the past two weekends.
“Sam, this is my baby sister, Megan, visiting us all the way from Utah. Megan, this is my best friend, Sam.” Maggie’s smile falters with recognition as Miles, her…brother—oh fucking fuck, her brother—drapes his arm over her shoulder and smiles back at me.
Like a moron, I instantly bring my beer to my lips and take three slow glugs. Whatever I can do to avoid touching her outstretched hand right now because I’m convinced the second I touch her in front of her brother, Miles will know I’ve thought about her naked no less than nineteen times.
And now I’m thinking about her naked again.
I nod stupidly and continue to chug my beer like a damn college frat boy as Miles and Maggie watch me curiously. Finally, I pry the cold glass from my lips long enough to give her a head nod.
A fucking head nod.
Only douchebags who call a girl basic would give a fucking head nod.
I look down at where she’s still holding her hand out for me to shake, and God help me, my traitorous eyes scan the rest of her body at the same time. Her perfect round tits are covered beneath this short black lace dress. It’s way too fucking dressy for the likes of Pearl’s, but hell if she doesn’t look sexy. She’s wearing black plaid tights and little ankle boots with a big ass heel that bring her up to my chin. I’d gotten used to her being at my chest in her snow boots. The same boots she was wearing when I kissed my best friend’s little sister in my fucking fishing hut.
My mind instantly begins trying to remember everything I said to Miles about his sister in his truck earlier. Jesus Christ, this is bad.
Suddenly, Maggie reaches out and forcefully grabs my hand to shake. “Hi Sam, my friends call me Maggie. Miles is the only one who still calls me Megan…even my parents say Maggie. It’s nice to meet you…for the first time.”
She’s talking slow, and I feel myself nodding with buggy eyes as I attempt to swallow back the cotton in my mouth and ignore the sparks shooting up my hand from her touch. “Nice to meet you for the first time, too. How long have you been in town visiting?” Jesus hell, I sound like a robot on acid.
Her dimple flashes when she realizes I’m not going to spill the beans. “I just arrived a couple of hours ago.”
I unclench my jaw and belatedly realize we’re still shaking hands. “Today?” I can’t help but say it as a question because where the fuck has she been staying for the past week if Miles thinks she just got into town today?
“Yes, I was visiting my boyfriend in his hometown on the East Coast and decided to stay in Boulder for a few weeks before heading back to Utah.”
My eyes are blinking, and I can’t stop them because my mind is completely jumbled up right now. I can’t differentiate the lie from the truth. Is she still with her boyfriend and was lying to me? Or did she tell me the truth, and she’s lying to Miles?
This is why you don’t break your own rules, Sammy. Girls with baggage are never easy.

Gone With the Ghost by Erin McCarthy - Guest Post & Promo

I've long been a fan of Erin McCarthy, so I'm thrilled to have her here to promote the first book in her latest series, Gone With the Ghost!  I also love a good paranormal mystery, so this one is definitely on my weekend to do list.  If you've read Erin's backlist you know she often talks about or has ghosts in her books, so this should be fun!

About the Book:

Bailey Burke has had a rough six months it's not easy thinking your romantic overtures toward your best friend caused him to kill himself. Except that's exactly what happened. Ryan is very much dead, having shot himself with his own police-issued gun. Guilt and grief shouldn't cause hallucinations though, but six months after Ryan went into the ground, Bailey is freaking out and swearing his ghost is standing in her kitchen. Which he is.

Ryan claims he didn't commit suicide, but was murdered, and he needs Bailey to help him find his killer so he can earn his ticket out of purgatory. Which contrary to national opinion is not their hometown of Cleveland. Ryan's counting on a stairway to heaven, as opposed to wings, since that might be a little unmanly for a cop, even a dead one.

An expert in home design, with her own staging business, Bailey can tell you where to place a couch to improve flow and comfort, but solving a crime? Not her area of expertise. But with help from Ryan's former partner, Marner, she is unraveling the mystery of what happened to Ryan that day and unwittingly putting herself in grave danger.

Erin, thanks for stopping by BiblioJunkies HQ!  Can you tell us a little about Gone With the Ghost?

Erin:

Two things I was obsessed with as a kid- ghosts and murder mysteries. Yes, I was a weird child. Yes, my mother debated therapy for me at one point given my active imagination and macabre hobbies, but she decided to trust her gut and let it play out. Now she’s happy to know I’m not a psychopath, I’m just a writer. Starting a new series and branching into mystery from romance was an easy leap for me. I always loved adding an element of mystery to my romance novels and I’ve been a mystery reader since childhood.

When my daughter was a baby and I had zero money, I went to the library three or four times a week and eventually checked out every Agatha Christie book they had (close to 60, I would guess) and then worked my way through all their cozy mysteries. If it had a kitten or a cupcake on the cover, I was all over it! So when the opportunity came along to create a mystery series, my heroine Bailey popped into my head immediately. An amateur sleuth with a love for fashion and HGTV yet who grows intrigued by mayhem and murder? Very close to my heart. While I’ve always been fascinated by ghost stories, I honestly am not even sure where the idea for the ghostly sidekick came from. Suddenly Ryan was there talking and the first book just about wrote itself.

If your best friend came back as a ghost, what would be the first thing you would do with them?

Here’s a snipped of Bailey and Ryan’s friendship:

“You really have lost too much weight.”
“What?”  I spun around and found Ryan staring at me critically.  So much for his closed eyes.  The aqua and yellow shirt was in my hand.  Not on my body yet.  Which meant I was only in panties and a bra, and he was staring at me.  Damn.
“You look too skinny.  Men like women with something they can grab onto.”
Nice to know even in death he found me unattractive.  I rolled my eyes at the hangers.  “Thank you.  I’ll remember that next time I’m looking for a man to grab me.”
“Hey, I just had a thought.  I wonder if I can still get a hard on?”
Good grief.  “You could have kept that thought to yourself.”
“No, I’m serious.”  Ryan sounded agitated, but I refused to look at him.  “Man, I don’t know which would be worse- never getting it up ever again, or getting it up and not being able to do anything about it.”
We were wading into waters I could very easily drown in.  “I’m sure there’s a hot ghost or two in purgatory you can investigate this issue with.”
“I can’t wait that long- this is scary.  Quick, just turn around, and take your bra off.  Let’s see what happens.  I have to know.”
Nothing could get me into my shirt and wide-leg trousers faster than that.  “You’re not going to be aroused by me.  We’re friends.  It’s not the same.”  Unfortunately.  “So forget it.  I’m not taking my bra off in front of you.  Pop into the Crazyhorse Saloon tonight and get the answers to all your sexual questions.  That’s what sixteen year old boys do.”
I smoothed my shirt in place, finished buttoning my white pants and turned to him.  “Look, I’ll help you do whatever it takes to find your killer, but I have to draw the line somewhere.”
“I’d take my pants off if you asked me to.”
It was tempting, but I controlled myself.

And there you have it folks, mystery, hornball ghosts - what more can you ask for?  Thanks to Erin McCarthy for guest posting with us and providing us a sneak peak at Gone With the Ghost!  Ghosts not your thing?  Check out Erin's extensive backlist - seriously, she's written just about everything in the romance genre, there's sure to be a plethora of goodies there for you to enjoy!  My favorites are Bad Boys Online (her story is awesome!), the True Believers Series (god this series gets me every freaking time!), and Houston We Have A Problem.
