That's What HE Said Thursday #14

Image courtesy of Kei at The Lovely Pages Review

That's What He Said is a weekly meme hosted by the ladies at Chapter Break, where we spotlight a quote from our book crush to the object of his desire. We like to pretend it's us.

What better way to celebrate our book boyfriends?

* * * * * * * * * *

This one comes from one of Shel's favourites, The Bet.

"That," he said as he kissed her nose, "is a shame. You should be told you're beautiful everyday. Because every day it's true, and every time I see you, you grow in your beauty. Just because people don't say the words, doesn't make it any less true, Kace."

Shel's Top 10 of 2014

Well, with Nat & Bel already having posted their top 10's, I guess it's my turn.  I had a horrible time choosing (as I always do).  This year was especially difficult and I cheated just a little, by including to Jennifer L. Armentrout books, but I just couldn't decide which I liked more.  One book that didn't make the list, because it wasn't my top 12 list, but I loved equally with those on the list, is Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White.  It was great and you should all read it.  But enough about that, here are my Top 10 choices (in no particular order):

All Lined Up by Cora Carmack

It's been billed as Friday Night Lights as a New Adult book.  For me, I just loved Carson.  He has one of my favorite lines when discussing her father, he tells Dallas "Sometimes it's hard to see past our own broken pieces."

Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost

This really should be the entire Cat & Bones series.  It became a favorite of both Nat & I this year and we love it!  Nat promised me a "Bones' chew toy" t-shirt for Christmas...

I Want It That Way by Ann Aguirre

I can't think Harlequin enough for sending this ARC, I LOVE this series!  I Want It That Way is definitely my favorite, but the entire 2B series is great.

The Bride Wore Size 12 by Meg Cabot

The long anticipated Heather Wells book!!!  I loved rejoining Heather and crew for more campus capers and I really hope there are more in the works!

The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken

Oh my god, you guys have to read this book!  I loved it so much!  The Wager is equally fantastic, but I went with The Bet because it was first in my heart.  Seriously, we should all be so lucky as to have such a fabulous grandmother!

Veronica Mars: The Thousand Dollar Tan Line by Rob Thomas and Jennifer Graham

I admit, I didn't read this one.  I listened to the phenomenal Kristen Bell narrate the audio book and it was just like watching Veronica Mars with the voice overs.

Boomerang by Noelle August

Boomerang is a refreshing bright and optimistic New Adult.  So many NA books are about seriously hurt or broken people, but Boomerang is about two, somewhat, normal people finding love.  I'm super excited for Rebound.

Wild by Sophie Jordan

The Ivy Chronicles are for anyone who loves great romance writing, because Sophie Jordan is a master.  I enjoyed all three books in the series, but Wild was my favorite.

Biting Bad by Chloe Neill
Vampires roaming Chicago with swords.  Enough said.

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I admit, I'm cheating.  I could not choose between these two.  Layla's struggles and Roth's hotness make White Hot Kiss a must read.  On the other hand, the haunting story and edge of your seat suspense of Don't Look Back makes that a must read as well.  Either way you win, really.  :-)

I hope we've given you a couple of ideas for your ever-growing TBR piles.  We here at BiblioJunkies wish you all the best for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015.

The Wager by Rachel Van Dyken Pre-Launch Biltz & Giveaway!

I just finished The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken last week, so I am thrilled that we are part of the pre-Launch Blitz for Book 2 in the series, The Wager.  If you are looking for an entertaining New Adult read, look no further.  Don't forget to enter the giveaway below!

THE WAGER by Rachel Van Dyken (July 1, 2014; Forever Trade Paperback; $12.00)
Lose a bet, lose your heart...

What is it about a junior-high crush that can send an otherwise intelligent woman into a tailspin? TV reporter Char Lynn wishes she knew. Jake Titus is too rich, too handsome, too arrogant: a trifecta that once lured Char into the best night-and worst morning-after-of her life. Now they've been thrown together in a wedding party. It's awkward, but survivable . . . until Jake stops acting like a jerk, and starts acting like the man she'd always hoped he could be.
If watching your brother marry your best friend is weird, being attracted to your best friend's otherbest friend is downright bizarre. Unfortunately for Jake, Char hasn't forgotten how he once tossed her aside. Worse still, Jake's already-nutty grandma is even crazier about Char. Cue meet-cute shenanigans and all manner of meddling, and somehow, Jake's falling. For Char. Now all he has to do is make her believe it . . .

Excerpt:

“Jake!” Grandma peered around the mannequin and yelled. “Help her out of that dress! We have a wedding emergency! Hurry!”

“Right.” Jake released Char’s hand and shook his head as he took a step away. “Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve helped you out of your clothes, huh, Char?”

And special moment gone.

Ignoring the burning sensation on her face, Char walked into the dressing room and pulled the curtain.

“Don’t you need help?” came Jake’s voice.

“I think I know how to undress myself, Jake.”

“Yes.” His warm chuckle made Char want to smack him. Shivering, she reached for the zipper. “But when I do it, it’s unforgettable. That’s all I’m saying.”
Fine. She’d had enough. Refusing to let him think she was afraid of him touching her, she took his challenge. With a huff Char pulled open the curtain.

“Prove it.”

His eyes widened and then a wicked smile curved his lips. “My pleasure.”

The way the man said “pleasure” did really unfortunate things to Char’s body, things that made her re-think her rash decision.

“Where’s the zipper?”

“Aww… can’t find it? That happen to you often, Jake? Can’t find the zipper, where does my equipment go…”

“Oh that, I never have problems with. You should know.”

Her eyes narrowed into slits as she watched him close the curtain and then do a turning motion with his finger.

She turned around and faced the mirror. Jake placed his hands on her shoulders then ran them down both of her arms. She would not shiver, she would not react!

He placed his hands on her hips, then unzipped the dress. Slowly he ran his hands back up the sides of her body, all the way until he hit just below her breasts. Her breath hitched as he winked at her in the mirror, bypassing her breasts and finding the fastener behind her neck.

Char chewed on her lower lip as she watched him delicately undo the fastener and then held the dress to her body so it wouldn’t fall.

“You have beautiful hair.” He ran a few pieces through his fingers and sighed, locking eyes with her in the mirror.

He wasn’t smiling. Was he seriously paying her a compliment? To her face? Or her reflection?

“I, uhh—”

“It’s just a compliment, Char. Not a proposal.”

She blushed profusely. “Thank you.”

The way he looked at her made her feel naked. And now she remembered why things had gone haywire in the first place. She never knew which Jake she was talking to. The one who had been her friend when she was little, or the millionaire playboy who had no soul.

Char doubted he even knew which one he was. She just needed to make sure she remembered, lest she end up with a broken heart again.

“Everyone decent?” Grandma called from the other side of the curtain.

Jake stepped back and winked. “Unfortunately.”

Char felt her face heat.

“Damn,” Grandma called. “You’ve lost your touch, son.”

“Don’t I know it.” He licked his lips and nodded one last time at Char before stepping on the other side of the curtain.

Check out this excerpt:

Travis sighed next to her. “You don’t need a man like Jake to give you what you want.

Believe me. When you have the perfect house and tons of money, you still won’t be complete if the man you share it with is out paying whores to do things you would never do.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Kacey joked.

“Kace! Jake isn’t worth it!”

“No.” She laughed. “I meant things that strippers do. Pretty sure I know how to please my man. I could drive circles around those girls. I just need the right guy.”

Travis tensed next to her. He cleared his throat and pushed away from the chair. He walked over to the counter and began cutting the pie.

What was his deal lately?

“Let me guess.” Kacey leaned over the counter. “Raspberry pie?”

“How’d you know?” He smirked. His voice was hoarse.

“It was the only pie your grandma taught you how to make, and if I remember correctly, you made it for your senior prom date.”

“Ugh.” Travis carefully cut it into eighths. “If I remember correctly, she spilled it on her dress and blamed me for making raspberries red.”

“She always was such a charmer. What was her name again?”

Travis chuckled. “Oh no you don’t. That’s just what I need. You digging up my past girlfriends and making fun of them. Besides, I don’t date girls anymore. I date women.” He eyed her up and down before slowly licking the fork.

Kacey averted her eyes, mainly because the picture of him licking that fork was so erotic she nearly jumped across the table and assaulted him. Apparently, this is what happens when you don’t have boyfriends and the closest relationship you’ve had in the past year has been with your e‑reader and a fictional duke named Henry.

“So . . .” Kacey nudged him a bit with her arm. “Women, hmm? What women are you dating? I don’t see any of them here for family dinner night.”

“There are no women.”

Kacey’s heart hammered in her chest.

“If you must know, there is one woman. One being the key word.”

She clenched her fist and cursed herself for bringing the subject up. “What’s her name?”

“Oh no you don’t!” Travis placed the knife on the plate and grabbed Kacey by the shoulders. “That’s just what I need, you stalking the one woman I’m interested in.”

Did he say he was interested in only one? Damn the man. Be unattractive! She wanted to yell. “C’mon, Trav, you know me. What harm could I possibly cause?”

“Junior year—” he began.

“Forget I asked.”

“Junior year.” He held his finger in the air as he was making his point. “Somehow you discovered I had a crush on Ashley Willis. I still don’t know how, considering I’m a guy and I don’t keep a diary.”

“No.” Kacey dipped a fork into the pie and licked the tangy berries off it. “But you did moan her name one time in your sleep. But carry on.”

He glared. “You told her.”

“Okay, Trav, come on. I did nothing of the sort. I merely hinted that you had a tiny bit of a crush on her.”

“Kace, making a poster with my face on it and heart stickers is a hell of a lot more than hinting. God, I don’t even think you know the meaning of the word discreet.”

“Do too!” she argued.

He walked around the table and pulled her into a tight headlock.

“Do not!” She fought against him but was helpless. “Do you give?” he whispered into her hair.

His hard-muscled chest was heaving behind her. Did she give? Oh God, what she wouldn’t give for something, anything.

Ah! Red alert! What was she thinking? It’s Travis, Travis!

“Travis!” she screamed, totally unintentionally. He released her and winked.

“Come on. Let’s take the pie in before they think you stabbed me or something.”

“Close,” Kacey grumbled, though stabbing wasn’t necessarily what she had in mind.

Rubbing his body down with berries and licking it off? Yes. Violence? Only that of a sexual nature.

She needed to trip and hit her head or something to shake Travis’s smile and scent out of it before she lost her mind.

“There you two are!” Grandma winked as they rejoined the family and began to enjoy the pie. “I thought maybe Travis was having an encounter in there with you, little girl.” Grandma winked again. Unfortunately, at that exact moment, Kacey, having taken a ginormous bite of pie, began to choke.

It worsened when Travis lifted his hands in the air and said, “I was trying to be discreet.”

Kacey glared.

His entire family laughed, and she kicked at him again under the table. He moved his foot in time and then stuck out his tongue like a two-year-old.

And really, maybe it was the sexual frustration, but she lunged for him, his chair tipped backward, and she straddled him, shoving pie into his beautiful face all the while screaming, “I’ll get you!”

In her mind, the family was cheering, when really everyone was completely silent.

Except Travis, who was yelling and cursing and spitting pie back out at her. Luckily, they had hardwood floors instead of carpeting.

Finally, when the pie was done, she wiped a berry off his face and licked her fingers. His eyes darkened, and for a minute it looked like he was going to kiss her.

He leaned forward and reached up behind her. And suddenly she had hot pie all over her face.

“I win, Kace,” he whispered huskily into her ear.

Yes, yes, you do.
