Jus Accardo's latest is a New Adult mystery.  Kayla is wanted for murdering her mother.  She has been on the run for a year - exhausted, alone and at wit's end, she returns to the scene of the worst day of her life to find whatever clue her mother left her.  Of course, while there she's caught by two bounty hunters - Patrick Tanner, the man who has chased Kayla and her Mom her entire life, and Shaun, his apprentice/adopted son.  Before Kayla is taken away, someone opens fire on all three of them and the race is on.

To survive, Kayla will have to play nice with Shaun and learn to trust the man she's ran from all her life.  She doesn't really have a choice though, because Shaun has handcuffed them together and lost the key.  

With Accardo's trademark wit and snarkiness, Kayla is a fun and fiesty heroine.  I love that Accardo's characters are strong and decent.  She's brave, self-reliant and smart.  For his part, Shaun is resourceful, brave and just damaged enough to understand what Kayla's been through.  Together they are a force to be reckoned with as they hide from their many attackers and try to figure out the mysteries surrounding Kayla's life and her mother's death.  

RoS is full of twists and turns, lots of misdirection, and just a good solid mystery.  RoS has a little something for everyone, humor, mystery, heat and just a touch of angst.  Plus, it's on sale right now - get it for $2.99!

Ruined is Jus Accardo's first foray into New Adult and it's a success.  Ruined is dark, mysterious and sexy.  There are some predictable plot points, but plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing.  Jax's family dynamic alone keeps you interested.  The relationship between Jax and Chase (the modern Cain and Abel) is intense and your heart will break for the brothers and their uncle.  

As for Sam and Jax, it's a tale as old as time.  Two best friends fall in love, boy shares his soul with a demon that feeds off pain and suffering, boy leaves so that he doesn't kill everyone he loves as the demon demands.  Girl, heartbroken tries to move on, but is attacked.  Boy returns because of family obligations and stays to protect the girl.  Well, you'll just have to read Ruined if you want to know what happens after that.  :-)  

If you are looking for a New Adult taking on the fight between good and evil, you should check out Ruined.  I cannot wait to see what is next for Jax.

Shel's Top Ten(ish) of 2013

2013 was a good year.  I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked, but I'm not complaining.  I barely hit 100 books this year and it was difficult to narrow down a top ten, so I may have cheated, just a little bit.  I do hope you will forgive me.  So here they are, in no particular order.

Darker Days is the first in a new series by Jus Accardo.  It's about Jessie Darker, who works at the family detective agency specializing in paranormal problems, her demon father and the seven deadly sins.  Trust me, it's fun.  I can't wait for the next installment.

Spirit is book 3 in the Elemental Series by Brigid Kemmerer and if my raving hasn't yet convinced you to read this series, well, I don't know what to do with you!  This year, Bel & Nat finally caved and read the series, much to my delight.  Spirit tells Hunter's story and it is heartbreakingly beautiful.  Also, I really think that Michael needs hugs from all of us.  

Everyone knows that Jill Shalvis is my imaginary BFF because I love her books so much, so it shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that I LOVED all her books this year.  Rumor Has It was probably my favorite new Jill of the year, but they were all fun.  If you love steamy romance that will make you laugh out loud, you will love Jill Shalvis too.  

I was surprised by how much I loved this middle grade tale of Norse Mythology.  Loki's Wolves is my surprise favorite of the year.  I loved it so much that I bought it for my niece for Christmas. Odin's Ravens will be released in May 2014 and I will be ready! 

Sweet Evil had been on my TBR pile for far too long and once I finally read it, it stuck with me for days.  I haven't read Sweet Peril yet, because the third book doesn't come out until Summer 2014 and there's only so much torture a girl can take.  

I know, I'm cheating again, but seriously, there is too much JLA awesomeness in a given year to pick just one.  Seriously, she writes like a maniac and I love her for it!  I really loved Bitter Sweet Love, but I think her taking the Lux Series into the adult world with Obsession was my favorite of the year, especially with the completely new viewpoint of the Arum, as opposed to the Luxen.  I hope there are more to come.

I know everyone is raving about Rainbow Rowell's YA books, and I will get to them someday, but her adult book, Attachments had me laughing out loud.  It's an unusual tale about an IT person reading the emails between two best friends that work at the same company.  Trust me, you don't want to miss this.

Rick Riordan knows how to weave a tale, especially a tale of woe, which is exactly what House of Hades is.  A woeful tale of hope, the battle against evil and oneself.  House of Hades is probably my favorite book of the year.  It's definitely a standout and next year, the final installment in the Heroes of Olympus series, Blood of Olympus, will probably be my favorite of 2014.  

All I can really say about the Raven Cycle, is wow. I stayed up almost all night, for two nights reading The Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves.  They are outstanding and I definitely see why Natalie has such a crush on Maggie Stiefvater.  

It's a tough choice between Midnight Frost and House of Hades for my number one choice of the year.  With the end of both series in 2014, I don't know what I will do, but I cannot wait to see what Jennifer Estep has in store in Killer Frost.  Midnight Frost was an action packed adventure of mythical proportions, with Loki's followers causing Gwen and crew all kinds of trouble.  Lucky for me I get to see how it all ends next month! (and then I will cry).  

I hope you all have as difficult a time picking your favorites of 2013 as well.  Here's wishing you tons to choose from next year as well!

Darker Days is fast-paced fun, featuring Accardo's signature snarky, strong female characters!  I'm a fan of Accardo's Denazen Series, so I was excited to see a new series from Entangled Teen.  Darker Days introduces the Darker Agency - Mother-Daughter private investigators that specialize in the paranormal.  A perfect set-up for adventure and fun.  There's laugh-out-loud moments intertwined with death matches.  

There are a lot of similarities between Accardo's two series.  Like Dez in the Denazen series, Jessie Darker is full of snark, bravado and one messed up family.  Like Kale, Lukas Scott is not your normal guy.  While Kale has been unable to touch anyone without killing them and has been locked away in a Denazen his entire life, Lukas is a man out of time, 147 years out of his time and locked away the entire time.  In both series, it is the headstrong heroine that takes the lead, with her friends and boys following.  

Truth is, I think I like Darker Days more than the Denazen series.  Jessie lacks the anger (at least so far) that Dez carries.  The premise is much more fun and sets the stage for high jinks and adventures - the field is wide open with where Accardo can take this series.  If you like paranormal romance, with tons of twists and turns, pick up Darker Days!

Tremble Playlist Presented By Jus Accardo & Giveaway

It's always fascinating to learn what that first inspirational spark for a story idea is. And it's easy for us readers to romanticize our favorite authors sitting at a desk, wired from their fifth cup of coffee, words pouring out of them faster than they can type. And for us it's always exciting to learn how music plays a huge part in the writing process.

Today we are thrilled to have Jus Accardo, author of the Denazen series, join us to share her music inspirations with us.

Music is a huge motivator for me. I can link all the memorable and life changing moments in my life back to a specific song. Writing is no different. The perfect tune can bring a scene or character to life. It can chase away writer's block and help set the tone.

Like Touch, the opening scene for Tremble came to me from a song. I'd written an entirely different first chapter, and wasn't happy with it, then boom! I heard Powerman 5000's Bombshell—which is exactly what Dez gets in those first few pages. A bombshell.

In Tremble, Kale goes through some serious changes, and he's dealing with a lot of anger. Cage the beast from Adelita's Way is perfect was get me in that frame of mind.

Dez is going through a lot in Tremble, too. Dido's Here with me is a good representation of her mind frame. She's determined, regardless of how impossible things seem.

And then, of course, you have to have a good conflict song. Shinedown's Enemies fits the bill (plus it's just such an awesome song!). Dez's enemies seem to be everywhere.

Dez is a girl who is definitely not afraid to fly her freak flag. Halestorm's Freak like me is totally her.

There's a scene at the end of the book—I can't really say anything about it without spoiling it—that is perfect for Adele's Someone like you.

Then, of course, there are multiple songs that are just inspirational be it for characters, scenes, or the overall feel of a book. Avatar's Smells like a freakshow was playing in my head for multiple scenes.

I'm torn between liked and really liked...

Tremble was heartbreaking and hopeful, all at the same time.  Dez is facing her impending death and the hate and Kale's rage and anger, all at the hands of her father.  Even facing death, heartbreak and memory loss, Dez is full of sarcasm and spunk, making her an endearing heroine.  Tremble is about the power of love and lengths desperate people will go.  It's a great third installment and I recommend you all pick up this series.  Wit, humor, hot boys and great superhuman fun, who could ask for more?

When a strange boy tumbles down a river embankment and lands at her feet, seventeen-year-old adrenaline junkie Deznee Cross snatches the opportunity to piss off her father by bringing the mysterious hottie with ice blue eyes home.

Except there’s something off with Kale. He wears her shoes in the shower, is overly fascinated with things like DVDs and vases, and acts like she’ll turn to dust if he touches her. It’s not until Dez’s father shows up, wielding a gun and knowing more about Kale than he should, that Dez realizes there’s more to this boy—and her father’s “law firm”—than she realized.

Kale has been a prisoner of Denazen Corporation—an organization devoted to collecting “special” kids known as Sixes and using them as weapons—his entire life. And, oh yeah, his touch? It kills. The two team up with a group of rogue Sixes hellbent on taking down Denazen before they’re caught and her father discovers the biggest secret of all. A secret Dez has spent her life keeping safe.

A secret Kale will kill to protect.

The Bad:
There were parts of the story that were just a little "too" convenient and coincidental, either that or Dez is the absolutely most self-involved person in the world not to notice the world around her.

The Good:
I wasn't sure I was going to like this books when I picked it up, but the premise sounded interesting and I thought I would give it a try.  I was pleasantly surprised that I became quickly engrossed in Kale and what it would be like to experience the world anew.  In some ways I felt bad for Dez, it seems as though everyone in her life used and betrayed her.  In other ways, I found her to be an annoying teenager.  Self-involved and reckless.  

All in all, I enjoyed Touch and am reading Toxic for the upcoming release of Tremble in May!
