VIRAL by T. Gephart

Available Now!

SYNOPSIS:

White Trash Circus will be taking an extended break and won’t be playing any time in the foreseeable future. Please lodge all your complaints to my guitarist—and my ex best friend—who I found inside the girlfriend I’ve had since high school. I will pull the freaking knife from my back and continue—without either of them—when the time is right. With enough hate and anger coursing through my veins to keep me in therapy for life, I’m going to save my cash and let the music heal me. Prepare all your bleeding hearts to be tormented with the most righteous, heavy and cataclysmic tunes to ever come out of me. So there’s that to look forward to. Thank you for all the support over the years, the gigs, the love and most of all memories. Don’t trust anyone and stay metal—Vaughan.

PS. Connor, you left your guitar and rig at my house so I took the liberty of relocating it to my front lawn. I might have dropped it on the way out the door. In your own words, brother, “Sometimes stuff just happens.”

PPS. Our drummer spontaneously combusted and is no longer with us.

WhiteTrashMegaFan- Whoa! Is this real?

VaughanLover4Eva - I love you Vaughan, you were too good for her anyway. I want to have your babies.

HeavyBrad69– So rock and roll!! Can’t wait for the new stuff, it’s going to be metal AF!

Nico – Ummm, Vaughan, what about me?

LicksNStick - LOL awks

White Trash Circus – No one cares about the bass player, Nico.

EXCERPT:

“Vaughan, ready to go on?” She waltzed into my dressing room without an invitation—not that I would have turned her down—and looked around with interest.

Layered in black, her jeans and jacket were far from seductive, but it didn’t matter, my eyes traveling over her with a greed I didn’t understand or want to contain.

It was crazy, two seconds ago I had been ready to put my fist through a wall. Angry, frustrated and who knew what else. But there was something about Gillian that made me snap into focus. And in some weird way, I wanted to fucking please her. Maybe it was ’cause she didn’t want to hear my sob story. Or maybe I’d lied to Lindsey, and was desperate, just for someone different.

I coughed, my jeans getting tighter in the crotch as she gave me her attention. “Yep, all good.”

“Good.” She shifted her eyes back to the room, looking at the bottle of beer I had opened. “I expect you to be sober when you get on the stage.”

“It’s my first and last. Not an issue, I promise.”

I promise? What the hell was I saying?

She nodded, giving me a last look over before heading toward the door. “I’m glad to hear it, have a good show.” She turned to leave.

Damn it.

My skin itched as I watched her at the door, wanting to keep her around a little longer. Not in a creepy way like where I chained her to a chair and fed her frozen T.V. dinners, I hadn’t turned into a total degenerate. But so I could see if I could crack her code and solve the fucking riddle.

“I hope you’re going to stick around and watch.”

The Secrets Of Attraction by Robin Constantine

* * * 1/2

Set in the same world as The Promise of Amazing, this smart, surprising, and romantic follow-up to Robin Constantine's debut novel follows two New Jersey teens as they become friends and fall in love. Perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins, Sarah Mlynowski, and Jennifer E. Smith.

Madison Pryce thinks she's got everything figured out—she's working on a portfolio for a summer art program and hanging with her friends. Plus she has her hot boyfriend, Zach. But then a visit from a family friend turns Maddie's life upside down.
Jesse McMann is still reeling from a breakup that shattered his heart and his band. Then pride (and some goading from his bass player and fellow barista) forces him to find a new drummer—and the inspiration to write music again.

Kismet arrives in the unlikely form of Grayson Barrett, who tries out for Jesse's band, and whose girlfriend is BFFs with the cute girl who orders a chai latte after yoga every Thursday: Maddie. What Jesse and Maddie thought they knew about the secrets of attraction and the rules of romance changes once they start falling for each other.

Isn't this cover just so freaking cute? There’s nothing more gratifying that reading a sweet story that leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. That’s how I felt after I read Constantine’s previous release, The Promise of Amazing, so reading The Secrets of Attraction was a no-brainer.

This follow-up does feature characters from the previous book but the spotlight this time shines on Maddie. She’s just as nice as Wren but she comes with a hint of an edge to her. Trouble starts when her boyfriend says "I love you" to her. Most teenage girls would be ecstatic that their hot, popular athlete boyfriend would declare those magical three words. Not Maddie. She doesn’t feel the same at all. Not that he’s a bad guy just that she knows that she’s not in love. This makes things awkward between them especially when she strikes up a friendship with Jesse who works at the coffee shop near the yoga studio she goes to. Neither of them have any connection to each other until Grayson, Wren's boyfriend, auditions for Jesse’s band and now both groups of friends are intermingling.

Jesse's had his heart broken by his ex-girlfriend. She hooked up with his ex-best friend who was also the drummer in his band. Both betrayals hurt him badly enough that music kind of lost its luster. Enter Maddie whom he's been noticing for a while. Their friendship sparks something in him. She's delightful to be around and being in her company renews Jesse's interest in his music. He also wants to go for it with her but Maddie draws the line at just being friends. So Jesse has to come up with inventive ways to be with her.

I like that Maddie is certain about some things yet hesitant about others. For one, I like that she knew that she wasn’t in love with her boyfriend and doesn't want to mislead him once she musters up the courage to be truthful with him. I like her devotion to her friends. I like her closeness with her mom which does get tested at some point in the book. I like that her character experiences the typical anxieties about graduating high school and moving on to college. She has her studies then she has her passion which is art. There’s the practical side of her then there’s the side of her that wants to abandon the heavy responsibilities and just take that risk in pursuing art.

Jesse is great too. He’s got a few kinks to work out like getting his ex out of his system. He’s really into Maddie but she's not ready to admit that attraction. His thoughtful gestures toward her are impressive and will woo the reader as well. While he’s not declaring undying, eternal love here, it’s interesting how he’s the one pushing for them to be an item. Maddie just needs to realize that what she’s experiencing with him is indeed falling in love for the first time.

All in all, The Secrets of Attraction is just adorable and I know that I can count on Constantine to deliver that just-right amount of sweet and angst without too much melodrama.

Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott

* * * *

(NA - mature content, recommended for readers 18 yrs+)

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favorite son is sure to be a wild ride.

I have a thing or a type – bad boys with dark hair, tattoos, brilliant taste in music, fast cars and motorcycles. The tattoo thing is a recent development. So when I happened upon Lick and saw the rather stunning cover, well let’s just say that I got slightly giddy and tore through the entire book within a day. (And seriously, how could I even pass up a book with a title like that?) To say I’m completely enamored with it is an understatement.

When an utterly confused and hung over Evelyn wakes up to find out that she has somehow married a guy she barely knows, her life is turned upside down and inside out.  And in her less than stellar state she doesn’t recognize that she’s married to none other than David Ferris, rock god, songwriter and guitarist for the hottest band on the planet, Stage Dive. It's a rocky start to the nuptials when within the first few pages she wakes up married, pukes, requests a divorce and then pukes some more when she discovers that she’s got some ink too in a rather embarrassing spot. Yep, I was hooked.

The fun really begins when Ev goes out to LA to meet with David’s lawyers to hammer out details of the divorce/annulment. She gets a quick introduction to his crazy lifestyle and even crazier cohorts. When things get hairy with the paparazzi they escape to his beach house where they agree to take the weekend get to know each other. David encourages her to remember the night they met and what ensued before they tied the knot. The more they feel around each other, the more complicated it gets. Yet it just feels so inexplicably right.

While some details may seem a little out there, they don’t take away from how enjoyable this story is. I like Ev and David equally. The sparks fly constantly between them and they're so darn good together. They manage to annoy and intrigue each other. It’s obvious that even if she was a drunken mess when they met that something important happened between them.  And then there's the fact that they're going about their relationship in reverse which makes things even more perplexing and uneasy. There are hurdles in their way such as their past, trust issues and what their personal plans for the future are. But David attempts to put Ev's mind at ease when he talks about some new songs he's written since they've been together:

"They're love songs, baby.  Love isn't always smooth or straightforward. It can be messy and painful. Doesn't mean it isn't the most incredible thing that can ever happen to you. Doesn't mean I'm not crazy about you."

Suffice it to say that each of them has had their eyes opened as a result of this. Both of them surprised me in their own way with the direction they go in.

Lick is fun and sexy! David and Ev's intimate moments are a thrilling mix of tender and hot! And it also boasts some very funny exchanges courtesy of Mal, who’s the band's drummer. I swear I couldn't bear to put it down. I'm loving this book so much that I’m reading it again already. And Ms. Scott, how soon can we expect the next installment?
